General Banter / E85
November 16, 2006, 02:24:49 PM
E85 is more eco friendly than gasoline but doesn't get the fuel mileage gas does. From what i've read on the subject, E85 only gets 75-85% of the fuel mileage gas does, so over time gas is still more economical.

We had a station here that sold racing fuel for a while, 105 octane, but at almost $6 a gallon not too many people were buying! LOL

That was several years ago when gas was $.99 a gallon. I can imagine what it would sell for today!!!

At 10.5:1 you may want to add an octane booster along with Super!

When I rebuilt my buddies 454ci V8 (went from 8.25:1 to 10.5:1 comp & from 265bhp to over 500bhp) in his 73 Vette he started out running Super (over here it's only 95-98 octane depending where you go) and had to start adding 104+ Octane Boost as he was experiencing intermittant pinging.

Questions and Queries / Running in periods and revs
October 28, 2006, 02:00:03 AM
This is what I do when breaking in a newly built motor and it has worked for me without fault.

1. Run engine for 25-30 minutes @ a constant 2000rpm. (Especially if running in a new cam.)

2. Immediatly change oil and filter while hot. (Gets rid of anything that may have gotten into engine durring build up and initial startup flakes of metal from cylinder walls and rings.)

3. Run conservativly for 500 miles. (No raceing or high revving, always staying below 3000rpm, making minor adjustments to carb settings, timing, etc. as needed.)

4. Change oil and filter. (I know it can be a PITA but always change oil and filter when engine is at normal operating temperature, never cold. But you already know that i'm sure.)

5. DRIVE IT LIKE YOU STOLE IT!!!!

I have built many engines over the last 25 years and with this process I have never had an engine fail. Mind, this is just my way. Others may have just as good of processes they use.

Cheers, Carl

From the info i've got stroking the 365ci doesn't look like a good idea.

So, should I tell Brad you won't be needing the crank and rods??? He sent me an email today asking if we were still interested.

Is there likely to be a problem with that push rod? Should I be looking to swap that as well?

Shouldn't be a problem Jamie. Very unlikely you need to change it. Just wanted you to know it can slide out and be a PITA.

Cheers, Carl

What's involved in swapping the pump? I assume it's as simple as disconnect fuel hoses, unbolt and remove. Check gasket, reinstall, bolt up and reconnect lines.

There's also a push rod that bridges from the cam to the pump arm. They can be a PITA (wanting to slide down) while trying to install the new pump. I coat the push rod with some bearing grease (vaseline works well also) and shove it up in, the grease will hold it in place until you get the pump in.

Questions and Queries / What's this car?
October 25, 2006, 12:28:31 AM
I'm thinking 1968 AMC Javelin or AMX but it could very well be an Aussie Ford Falcon as they looked quite similar.

It looks like a Z28 package to me. It's maybe had a respray so all the Z28 detailing is gone except for the badges behind the front wheels down on the rockers and they look like they were sprayed over too. I thought all of the Z28 packages had the 5.7l 350ci engine???

I installed IE7 last night too.
Tis a bit of getting used to but is ok so far.
I've never had a prob with IE either and i've done a few dodgy sites, (mostly inadvertantly).
