I looking at having the trans fluid changed on Wendy's camaro as it should be done approx every 2 years according to the book and Wendy has owned it nearly 4 years I think and we have never had it changed Sooo how do I know what filter I should order from rockauto's as there seem to be a few and I don't want to get the wrong one I don't know what gearbox it has fitted It's a 1997 3.8 v6 30th anniversary year ( I wont be doing it myself either my trusted garage Autodan has said he will do it for me along with a few other little jobs that need doing )
I don't want to end up with a repeat of the caddy
Thanks All

Ps What would be the best oil filter as I might get the engine oil changed at the same time I was thinking one of these http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=56450\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=56450

Did the Z28 a few days ago and it's a very messy job

After removing the gearbox sump it was still dripping trans fluid 3 days later

I bought the filter, filter seal and a thicker cork gasket from USless Automotive

It's a right royal pain in the ass to get the sump gasket to seal, so it's £12.69 well spent for the thicker cork gasket

I always add a thin coat of gasket sealer as well

Don't forget the trans fluid

Cheers for that interesting reading  and info ... Its not the actual anniversary model as I thought... It has the (All 1997 Camaro models received "30th Anniversary" embroidered on cloth backed headrests on both front and rear seats and the  New style 5-star polished wheels) as for the oil change on the trans It will be done at the garage as I would not want to even attempt it I just supplying the filter and any sump seal if required.

when its done make sure 200% that no excess gasket sealer seeps inwards into the 2 notches on the inside of the gasket (top & bottom in martyn's pic)

It is my understanding that the top notch in the pic is there as a vitally important fluid vent for the O/D gear and it is catastrophic if this gets blocked... i.e. you need a new gearbox.

This is the case on the 700R4 and I assume it also is on the 4L60E as well.

Good advice Grasshopper, I only put the gasket sealer very thinly around those two areas

Another note - dont over tighten the cover bolts - it can cause leaks by distorting the cover.  If you're worried about them coming loose, a small drop of low strength loctite doesn't do any harm (222 is perfect) TBH its really not needed though.

I was rather heavy with the gasket sealer

So to avoid any bigger problems I dropped the gearbox pan again today

Looks like it was just OK, but better safe than sorry

Much thinner coat this time

I very carefully cleaned the drain tray with the intention of reusing the brand new transmission fluid, however after removing the sump there were little bits of gasket sealer here and there
Again looking at the picture below of an 4L60e it ain't worth risking blocking a channel, so put another £40 worth of new trans fluid in

I certainly wouldn't try to fix one

Yeah that small hole on the top edge of the gearbox in your photo there, that is the O/D vent hole...

what a stupid place to put it.

Or why not put a small 45 degree curved pipe extension on it so that it can't be fouled by the gasket or sealer

Mind you it's even worse removing the filter seal
