major problems in Liverpool today - it rained onto the ice and compacted snow on the roads but it was only just over freezing so it froze the second it touched, resulting in a sheet of ice over everything.

traffic reporter on the radio said she had been doing traffic for many years and never known conditions so bad.

In Scotland the army have been drafted in to clear snow - they have had their most intense snow fall for 50 years..
