On this day in 1937, the government of Germany--then under the control of Adolf Hitler of the National Socialist (Nazi) Party--forms a new state-owned automobile company, then known as Gesellschaft zur Vorbereitung des Deutschen Volkswagens mbH. Later that year, it was renamed simply Volkswagenwerk, or "The People's Car Company."

After the Nazis were defeated in world war two , Volkswagen was rebuilt by the British Army. So it's success is our own fault

Yup. The British just found the big metal pressing machinery in the bombed out Wolfsberg factory, capable of pressing out Beetle wings and shells. They needed to get the country mobilised again to rebuild it and there wasn't a better way than using the technology and plans for the VW Beetle that were already available.
