That's from a couple of years ago, it's changed around a bit since then.

The dish is for 23cm and 13cm EME, then there's a 70cm EME array behind it, on top of the tower is 17m HF beam, a 6m beam and a 4m beam. That's it at a third height, it all extends telescopically and also lofts over at the base.  Running across the garden is a tuneable HF dipole.

Okay, so, urm. What's it all for if it isn't boobies?

There's a guy a few cul-de-sacs over from me who has one of those things in his back garden (neighbours must hate him) - always wondered what it was for  . . .

Andy

It's all for Ham Radio, so all home brew made. Just a way of communicating with other people around the world.

The dish and array behind are a bit more specialised, they're for EME (Earth Moon Earth) transmissions. Transmitting a signal from earth and bouncing it off the moon back to earth. The 13cms transmitter has a maximum output of about 40watts, so not even enough to light a light bulb, but the signal does a trip of nearly 500,000 miles.

And again.  Why ?

Andy

Just because, it's a hobby. Like why build a racecar? Why go fishing? All stuff to pass time and self educate.

Funny thing is, you say, send an email, all this predates the Internet and email.

Some people get it, others don't. If you're into communication and electronics and that, it really is an interesting hobby.

Because it's cool.

F*ck knows - the supermarket is easier !

I know, I know.  I'm only ribbing ya'.

But, really, what's the deal with bouncing to and from the moon - that's got me wondering ?

Andy

Well it's inception came before there were any satellites in the sky, and the idea is no different to that. A VHF or UHF signal travels further in space than as a ground wave, ie, not leaving the atmosphere. This means you can in theory bounce your signals off the Moon and transmit them further than if you just directly pointed at someone.

Plus it's also pretty fecking cool knowing that what you're transmitting is bouncing off the moon and with a 2second delay is being received by someone else.
