Loss of power

A freind at work has a Peugeot 206 Sport Petrol 1.4v manual that currently looses power when driving along, and especially at roundabouts she finds it hard to get a biting point and rev's it a lot just to get it going, also the rev counter needle seems to yo-yo between 50 and 1500 rev's.

She's had to have the clutch replaced recently due to this problem.

Note this car has been in/out of the garage for the past 18 months to discover the problem, but to no avail so I offered your brains to see if you can help suggest any remedy's.

First thing I thought was clutch . . .

Does it randomly gain power or is it a case of the car looses power while travelling along ?

No gaining just looses, then gets over it after a while and goes back to normal till the next time it does it.

Or a sensor / ECU problem.

Has all the symptoms of a clutch on the way out but if this has been changed then maybe a sensor is giving duff values . . . ?

Although I can't think of how a sensor could do this ???

A quick Google suggest coil packs are a problem on the 206 could also be misfiring injectors. Both of these should register a fault code that can be read out easily, but don't pay more than £20 for the privilege...

I suspect the clutch is a red herring as if she's trying to drive it with a reduced or lumpy power then it's going to be all over the shop. Trying to drive it while it's playing up won't do the clutch any favors though...

It was more of a suggestion than a statement on the basis that if the engine is not getting the correct information from a sensor, at that load, etc, it could be running lean or rich.

Difficult to assess remotely, really.

Don't they have a clutch pedal sensor that are known to be problematic?

Could be the EGR valve ( Exhaust Gas Recirculation )

On petrol engines it closes at low rpm and then should open gradually at wider throttle settings.
It's only purpose is put unburnt gases back in the engine to lower emissions, but if it gets choked up, it doesn't open fully and strangles the engine

Ta, car goes back to the garage tonight, apparently it's been worse since the clutch change.  Will update when I know more.

Well all I know so far is that it's not the coil pack, and that's it they are still scratching thier heads.

Yep, they tried those too but nothing :(
