Where can I buy metal from?  To date I've only needed silly little bits, so B&Q has surficed, but now I'm going to need some more (sheet and box likely) and need a better option.

Check the yellow pages for steel suppliers mate. Tahts all i did when i was looking for steel to build the BBQ. Also always ring a couple of them as prices do change

Yep, just coming back to say I found a place.

What I need know is info on what the different options are/mean. (i.e hot rolled, cold rolled. Mild/industrial etc.

all depends what you are using it for, mild steel is good enough for patching car panels

Jamieg285

What about chassis rails?

I think these are normal cold rolled

Jamieg285

I think that too, but I would like to 'know', if I am going to do this fix.

I don't want the repair bending on me!!

I just through a load out mate we always get loads of off cuts and bits,

Don't know fully yet, I've not had a proper chance to look over the whole car.

From what I've seen so far :- a bit of sheet to replace the bit under the charcoal canister, and the rear frame rails look shot, not sure how bad or how much is affected yet.  Might be able to patch it, but it also might need replacing.

Will also be looking for SFCs again at some point, but I don't think they'd come out of off-cuts

Cold-rolled normally refers to formed sheet.

ie. Max 3mm thick normally . . . Body panels are cold formed . . . In fact almost ALL factory car body componants will be cold formed.

Hot rolled is your RSA's (Angles), UB's (Beams) PFC's (Channels) or - For what you want them for RHS/SHS (Rectangular / Square Box section)

Box section (as Circular Hollow section CHS) is hot rolled and seam welded.

ALL Hot rolled sections are distinguished by section and mass/m OR Thickness if uniform.

Eg. 50x50x5 SHS = 50 by 50 box with a uniform wall thickness of 5mm (nom)

Eg. 152x152x23 UC = 152 (nom) x 152 (nom) Uni. Column / 23 kg/m.

"Hot rolled" is "Mild" in this instance.

Cold formed can often be Pre-Galv sheet, too (for example).

Hope this helps.

I can get all the sheet metal you need free. may be able to get box section to but not sure.
