Braided fuel hose

I now have all the fittings I need to properly plumb the carb in  (from the existing pump)

I tried to put the ends on the fuel hose, but it didn't seem to fit - the braid is stopping the end going on.

I was going to just trim the braid back, but thought it might be a good idea to see if there is a 'proper' way to do them.

Anyone know?

I can't make it

The fitting is 2 piece - red bit and blue bit. Red bit unscrews from blue bit, clamping hose.
Hose is 2 piece - rubber with steel braid.

I can't slide the red bit through the red bit, to place over the 'barb' on the blue bit.
