Yup sorry to report that I broke my daily driver yesterday
I been having trouble selecting gears for the last couple of days and thought it was a lubrication problem ?
Took the drive shaft covers off last night to find that the pinion drive gear was just flopping about, amazed it was even driving the rear wheel.
Going to have to take the whole shebang apart tonight to see if it's repairable, trouble is if I need spares the shaft and pinion gears are made in the USA and the gear assembly is Japanese, doubt shipping would happen before Christmas

So I'm stuck driving the ruddy GMC whilst my bicycle is off road

LOL and there's me thinking it was one fo the motor vechiles you broke

Bit of a bummer though!!!

Thought that Fiat had fallen apart again for a minute...

Amusingly, keeping your eco friendly bike on the road involves shipping parts from around the globe via uber enviro unfriendly aircraft...

philoldsmobile

kinda ironic when you think about it...

Just finished stripping it down and the pinion gear is fooked, it has 7mm of sideways travel, there is barely any collar left to hold it onto the stub.

Here is the pinion in it's home position :

and floated out :

As regards to ECO I don't think that comes on to my agenda given some of the cars I own, I cycle becuase it keeps an old man fit, it's quicker round town and I can park anywhere for free

Oh and because it annoys the neighbours who can only afford one car

I still have my 96 spec specialised rockhopper upgraded with flexstem, alloy bars, shimano 96 XT front and rear shifters, 96 LX rapid fire indexed levers, XTR chain and XTR SPD peddles. Sold the mavic sup rims ages ago so its running on the original lightweight specialised ones.

Should really sell it but i doubt i would see £100 which is a shame as it had almost £2.5k spent on it originaly

I had some cheapo thing I brought for £99 . . . . . .

well i couldnt drive so i spent most of my money modding the bike that i did about 4k miles a year on

I just used mine for work for three years as I passed my test relatively late.

Done the job . . . . can't remember what happened to it now . . . .

Between the ages of about 10 and 16 I used to cycle everywhere.  Then I got lazy.

Spent my 1st real wage packet on a special edition Claud Butler, which I ended up really disliking, and is steadily rusting in the shed.

At 16 I bought a Dawes Magnesum Alloy bike.  The frame was cast as one piece instead of being welded tubes (hey this is like 14 years ago now!).
It was a lovely bike.  But then I got a drivers licence...

My parents had kept it up until last year figuring I might want it and of course s/hand bikes go for nothing.  But they got fed up of it clogging up teh shed and sold it off for £50...

thats where mine is, i did sell a lot of the crazy expensive bits off a few years back, things like the mavic sup rims with hope hubs, and my flight titanium saddle

Good news !

Got Management's old bike out of the shed which hasn't seen the light of day for two years and the tyres are OK after pumping up.
Took the lights off my bike and I'm mobile again - on a girls mountain bike , at least it's still dark morning & night

Even better news !

Just had a phone call from a very nice American chap called Tom from Zero cycles, he is going to ship me a new pinion gear and gear selector assembly free of charge
He's just e-mailed me the fitting instructions and apologies for the failure, even though I told him I've done over 3,000 hard miles on the bike in the last 12 months.
Can't complain at that
