OK my geeky friends I need a new " VERY CHEAP " computer ?
Want to run Excel, Powerpoint , Word and the Internet ( Broadband )
I also need a CD writer.
I'm thinking Desktop and lots of people are saying "Dell" but the cheapest without a monitor is £330
Aldi are doing a nice 17" LCD monitor for £99 this week, but I'm fecked if I'm paying nearly £450 for a basic system
Anyone got an ideas ???????

Bad news about the offer I can get from Dell Employee Purchase Program is that the upgraded monitor (15" to 17"), upgraded optical drive (CD-RW to DVD RW), and £20 off ends today, so would need to order soon.

That said, they normally replace offers with new ones pretty quickly.

If that's all you want to do, look at a second hand computer rather than new.
Pretty much anything from the last three years or so should do the job.

OpenOffice (http://www.openoffice.org/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">http://www.openoffice.org/ is a legally free, compatible equivalent to Microsoft Office. Worth a look to save some cash. Worst case, you don't like it, uninstall it and you're no worse off than when you started.

is that like star office? which i think they had on the machines at uni when i was there

Pod

Star office was the original one. Way back it was renamed Open Office (and has improved no end in the process) but Sun still do their own version of it which is called star office.
It's all the same thing really.
