Yeah but they're abolishing the first 10% bracket so effectively we're no better off, maybe slightly worse off

You sure that car tax hike won't affect used cars as well?

I can't see the point in it otherwise, or people will just buy nearly new instead.

I hope you're right as I'm running a 2.8 litre straight six and a 5.0 litre V8 now!

According to:
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/HowToTaxYourVehicle/DG_10012524\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/HowToTaxYourVehicle/DG_10012524
the new VED bands only apply to vehicles registered on or after 1 March 2001 and have type approval. Anything older (and non type approved newer cars?) will be on the old system. I'm not sure if those rates are going to change or not yet.

The impression I get is that this being just like the 1973 Cut-off-for-free-tax stylee thing in the future.
It's the time that we kill that keeps us alive...

From what I gather Car tax goes up to £180 / year tomorrow for all those not in the new bands . . .

Not great, but could be worse.

Ah, found it. Just been reading the Budget pdf itself

Pre 2001 tax goes up £5 per year for the next three years.

Other than passing the MOT, there is no incentive for existing cars to have lower emissions. So I won't be putting any cats back on my car any time soon.

My car has no cats either.

I was worried about this, but after looking up the car tax bit last night, I could only see it affecting the newer cars

Thats good as I plan on going backwards through the car ages!

Cunning Plan

First off, this global warming / carbon footprint stuff is a load a crap we all know - the earth is doing what its always done - heating up and cooling down..  More CO2 is made from farting cows and decomposing leaves than all the cars / power plants etc in the world combined..  Its all just a big excuse and another way of getting yet more money out of everyone (alot like the historic vechile band stopping at 1972 - what in 1973 there were NO classics made???)

Like someone else said - If you own a 4x4 - it doesnt 'pollute' sitting on your drive..  *thinking like the goverment here* it pollutes SO SO much  when you drive it - so why not put the cost of fuel up - i mean fuk it, its already up so high, i havent seen it below 87p/l for years.  That way you only pay for using it and IF it guzzles fuel you are paying more than everyone else anyway.........................................

......................................but no the goverment need money so anyway they can justify getting it is a given..

Looking at it another way - what happens to manufacturers??  The ones that have done their SWOT/PESTAL analysis properly would of seen this comming and started to adapt their 4x4s for the future market - Heres hoping for a V8 5.2 MOSTER GUZZLER with CO2 under 100g/km!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Free road tax!!

So in a way this might be good.. manufacturers being pushed to see what new technology they can produce to eliminate CO2..  AND there will be alot of cheap late model 4x4s kicking around!!!

Yah I doubt they will let it refresh every year with vechiles that were previously in the high bracket being excempt..  Like i said above this will mean manufacturers will have to produce low co2 producing 4x4s or not have them at all

£180 for my 'maro...
£140 for the Focus...

Giblets

£180 for the IROC
£180 for the 328i Touring

Just relieved I won't be paying £300!

Still think the idea is stupid though.

That means my 2000 328i is arguably more desirable than the 2001 model of equal mileage and condition because of the tax saving.

Although by 2001 the 330i had replaced the 328i if we're splitting hairs!

Fieldy

im happy its not £300 for the camaro
