Regarding clear-coat.

Can I spray bare metal (cast ally) with clear-coat to stop it getting too filthy under the Camaro ?

I'm guessing you can - but are there any special prep-things I must do first ?
Any tricks ?
Any (in a can) recommendations ?

Not sure really because Clearcoat is normally applied to another paint i.e. basecoat.
I think you could have adhesion problems spraying onto bare ally

NB: If in any doubt don't, I've alloy laquered a few parts in the past and when it starts to come off it looks pants and it's a barsteward to get the rest off again !

Rocky

Give it a gripper coat first, which it semi wet, just a quick pass will do, wait till it finger drags them go on with a wet coat. What paint are you using. 2k will stick to anything.

Just a can jobbie.  I've got that diff support which is rough cast, but machined in places . . .

Wanna make it hard for the dirt to get a hold 'cos I ain't cleaning the fooker.

You know thinking about this I'd just primer it and spray it silver with normal paint, you won't be able to tell the difference and it should last longer

Hammerite and the like do some interesting colours and finishes. Brush on or spray on.

or maybe get it powder coated
