Our new house is 4km away from the exchange !!!!!!!  This kinda rules out ADSL apart from maybe ADSL2+ which will still only give 1mbps :(

Cable modems look the way ahead (up to 20mpbs) but are WAY expensive (£37/month!!!!)

Anyone know anything about Virgin media? are they shite?

Looks like i may have to get Be ADSL2+ for £14/month but only get 1mbps :(

that's more expensive than the cable though, which is 8mpb... admittedly that would work in the car too though ......

They used to be NTL. Make of that what you will....

Don't forget, all the advertised speeds from everyone are 'up to', which means it will almost never happen.
More and more are doing traffic shaping - if you use 'too much' bandwidth, you get automatically limited to a much slower speed for an amount of time.
That applies to all ISP's, not just cable.

Well i just called pipex and im not limited so i guess its just more traffic on the line causing my loss of speed

well we got teh 10mb NTL virgin service and it is fine for us, mind you i can see the exchange box about 200 yds away from our back door

As phil says - dont expect any real help if/when summat goes wrong - customer service is very cr*p

took me 2 years to convince them i had a faulty modem, and to come out and change it, despite the fact it was a well known fault...

In the dark days of early NtHell it was more often down than up
But since Baz has been paid to go out and fix the cabinets all is well
