Ok so lets get over the fact that it's a BMW M3 V8 engine, but all the video is claimed to be shot using an actual running engine without any CGI

That's right, this commercial isn't some newfangled computer-graphic simulation. This is good ol' fashioned footage— you know, shot with cameras. Special holes had to be precisely cut for the tiny cameras to peek through, and other holes for just the right amount of lighting

Nice!

But...

How come the camera is so far from the flame front?
Surely at the point of ignition the piston is heading towards top dead centre and thus we'd be right up close?

Im guessing this is the piston POV so the flame view is on the power stroke

Roadkill

I'm a little suspect over that.

As HRC says, it doesn't make sense.

thats not real or at least its not a real engine imo i think they have created a  cylinder specifically to capture that image

or its CGI

Taken from the Press Release :

"The "Revolution" spot created by Austin-based GSD&M Idea City incorporates unprecedented technology to film the combustion process of a BMW M3 V8 engine without using computer generated effects.

Filming the process was not easy. Manifolds were cut, cylinders shaved, and lighting holes were drilled in three complete M3 V8 engines for Director Raf Wathion to use special cameras and lenses to capture the action"
