As part of the US Cash for Clunkers programme all the engines have to be destroyed. Drain the vehicle's oil and replacing it with a sodium silicate solution, then start the engine revving it at 2,000 rpm until the engine seizes

I wanted it to blow up for entertainment purposes...

Still seems like a bit of a waste to me for all these cars

Gator

what an utter waste that looks perfectly useable how does that help the enviroment

240,000+ Miles... And when it started up it sounded like it was good for 240k more miles....

So the factory cycle of minerals, energy and pollution has been spent to make this car back in the 90s but its still good to keep running but instead they choose to destroy the car and get the owner to buy a new car which has had to go through the factory / manufacturing process using minerals, energy and more pollution again..... Really doesn't make sense..
1968 VW T2 Bay Bus (currently being restored and upgraded)
1999 Jeep Cherokee XJ (modern classic daily driver)

i bet all that smoke was good for the environment too huh...

over here people are selling the cars that have come in for srap for 'parts only' i think thats a VERY good idea.  now at least all that polution from when it was made wont be 100% wasted.....

Roadkill

As said - utter waste of materials, energy etc . . . .

Just a government ploy - poorly disguised as actually "helping" the environment.

It's incredible that we vote these idiots in to rule us, really . . . . . .

Roadkill

Sidenote - it's actually not a bad looking car, either . . .

Motorama

FUBAR

what a completely f'kin ridiculous idea.

there's a million & 1 things wrong with that
It's the time that we kill that keeps us alive...

philoldsmobile

yup, perfectly usable car, destroyed so a new car can be sold. even friends of the earth claim its better for the environment to keep old cars on the road rather than produce millions of new ones..

nice looking, sweet sounding car.

v8mad0

what a waste, makes my blood boil

The Aurora had very sleek styling when jt was launched in about 94.

The 4.0L V8 engine is pretty high tech and is based on their Aurora indycar racing engine, all alloy components, 32 valves and good for 300BHP but it was de-tuned to 250HP to give it a longer life.  (which was a success given that this one had done 240,000 before they killed it).
It shares a lot of features with the Northstar including the zero coolant limp home mode.

I think it was also the last car off the line when they shut down Oldsmobile.
