Yup it records the highest number of people on - be they bots / search engines or users - if the number of people goes higher, it gets reset to that date /time - i can (and occasionally do) reset it...

The forum people updated that add-on to ignore bots, and looking around their site, there's a load of updates and new add-ons since we last added some.
