Profits at oil giant BP have more than doubled from a year ago on the back of rising oil prices.

Replacement cost profit for January to March was $5.6bn (£3.6bn), compared with $2.4bn for the first quarter of 2009 - a 135% rise.

NB : £3.86 per second if my maths is right

Odd how BP makes a profit when the oil prices go up yet the government (who take more than twice as much as BP from the forecourt price) are constantly making a "loss".

Maybe BP should take over the government ?

This I a good point. My friend who runs a total garage makes most of her money on shop items.

Oil giant Royal Dutch Shell has seen its quarterly profits jump by only 50% thanks to higher oil prices.

The Anglo-Dutch company said profits for the first three months of the year were $4.9bn (£3.2bn)

Hmm...

Time for some maths...

I read that the average petrol station sells 4.14 million litres of fuel per year.  There are 9,013 petrol stations in the UK which means that 37,313,820,000 litres of fuel are sold every year.

There are 31,536,000 seconds in a year.  So there are 1,183 litres sold every second.

The government (via fuel duty and vat) gets 75p per (119.9) litre.

So...

The government is making £887.25 per second for doing a grand total of naff all wich makes it pure profit imho...

Which do I have a problem with, BP making a profit of £3.86 per second, or the government making £887.25???

BP under pressure as the US oil spillage crisis worsens

Looks like they will be spending a few quid clearing up the 5,000 barrels of oil leaking each day
