who uses virgin media

ive been looking at the virgin media package,[as we now have deals on the fibre optic ] that has been installed in the street,

at the mo we pay nearly 60 bucks for bt broadband,sky and aol...

a similar package from virgin ''could'' be 38 bucks,

is this as much of a no brainer as it seems....
10mg download speed,
v box, free install
165 tv channels,
unlimited weekend and evening calls,
free calls to virgin mobiles,

how does this stand up against sky....

We had Virgin media broadband via fibre back in Swindon.
Fibre is fantastic as the speed is more or less constant at the speed they set as it's not reliant on phone lines - distance from exchange.
We had 20mb via them - can't wait for them to get fibre to more of MK.

Didn't have tv through them though as they don't do all channels - but that's prob changed now

We're with Virgin Media.

20mb broadband
Lowest TV package (as we don't watch much)
bog standard telephone package

costs £31 per month

Only problems we had was that Virgin used to "throttle back" the broadband and we used to get around 6-7mb.   It wasn't until we realised what they were up to and made a few "angry" calls to them threatening to leave that since then we constantly get 20mb

so how will i know what we currently ''download'' is it stuff actually downloaded/saved... or amount of use/traffic we generate.....

we cant get eurosport without it being the top tv package....and thats about all i watch.....

i also notice that we would get a few channels in HD for no extra charge..

.we dont do much tv.....we dont even have sky plus at the moment....

ah, no, sorry. We pay £10 for the broadband, then you could get the sky for a basic package of £20.... But that is what I would do.

We had virgin media in one of my old student houses, I found it slow and messy, but never looked since so I'm not the best person to give a POV I guess

I have been with Be since their trial rollout a few years ago, its still ADSL (ADSL2+ if you want to be pedantic) so distance from the exchange is till an issue although less than with ADSL1.
They advertise up to 24Mbps, I get 16Mbps, most people get 10-16Mbps I think unless they're very far from their exchange.  When I say 16Mbps I mean I actually get 16Mbps downloads every time, I'm not talking about line sync speed.

I pay about £13.50 a month (£4pm trial member discount) for it and get genuinely unlimited use for that, no throttling, no traffic shaping, no port blocking, they are not part of the phorm ad trial service either.

Basically O2 broadband is Be (they bought Be out) but the fine print is slightly different between them.


I had 1 slowdown for a couple of weeks in the early days when they first went live and loads of people signed up, I also had 2 outages lasting about 1 hour a couple of years ago.
But I've been with them now about 6 years so it's a good record and the speed really shines when I rent movies on my AppleTv box, a HD movie has buffered enough to begin watching within 15-20 seconds.


They don't do tv channels, I use Freeview instead and the difference in price between the broadband and a sky/virgin package means I can just buy any shows that I don't get on freeview (eg Lost) for £1.89 per episode from the iTunes store.  I figure that actually works out cheaper then subscribing as I don't watch most of it and so much stuff is repeats anyway...

I've got Be too, but im 4.5km from the exchange and only got 3Meg line sync speed, so about 400Kbps download, fastest thing I can get though a BT line though.

i've had more trouble though, i think I've had 4 outages in 3 years, longest one being about 2 days, some are only a few hours.

I've also had the cable replaced between our control box and the exchange and had numerous drop outs, probably 8 occasions where it's been unstable for a day at a time or more.

on the whole ok, best I can get without moving to virgin, BUT i don't want their phone line....  Id rather the phone line stayed with BT and virgin put a separate line in,

You have never had a tech out and even i have offerd to come round and take a look for you..... So you can't really complain.........

Uploads are due to change along with down loads soon... 50meg down load will get a 5meg upload....

I'm with Sky; tv is ok incl hd, phones a bit cheaper than BT but tthe broadband is shockingly slow; I input what I want, they go and collect it in a cart pulled by a three legged asthmatic donkey and then take a picture of it with a box brownie which they then hold up to my screen

we've always used BT, mainly I think because of 2 generations of Family having worked and working for them.  I have heard good and bad things about Virgin media though, they seems to be very proactive about implementing the fibre networks needed for "Next Generation" broadband too, moreso than BT anyway.

Yes, but it is crazy when you think countries like Japan have been on GIGABIT connections for years now - we are still messing about with MB. (OK OK different country infrastructure etc - but wow what a difference).

I remember the broadband lag behind America back in 99/'00 when I was just getting into online gaming (good old Unreal Tournament Multiplayer Demo), we had dial-up and had to wait until 18:00 to get on for free, the yank guys I used to play with (ooo errr) had Road Runner broadband at speeds of 10 / 20 meg!

Side-note. Don't / can't game anymore.

would love to have higher speed internet....but i don't see what benefit i get from it now - don't play online much / if ever and DL very little so the 12 mb from Sky is fine ....
