Cheap way of Heating the Garage over Winter ?

It got a little cold in the garage over winter last year and, as I spend more and more time out there now, I was thinking of keeping some kind of heating ticking over to maintain a low but constant heat.

I can't use gas as that'd obviously produce a load of moisture (something I wish to avoid with all my tools and the Caddy in there) - so I was thinking a oil-filled electric radiator (or two) ??

Anyone think of anything else / cheaper to run ?

FYI - I also run a de-humidifier throughout winter, too.

have a word with a pikey and get some cheap petrol, put in in the caddy, start the engine and turn the heater on full. jobs a goodun.

seriously though an oil filled rad is probably the cheapest option.

I disagree, if you leave it on all the time it's gonna cost a few quid in Electricity, plus they are expensive to buy

I use a small £10 fan heater which takes about 10/15 minutes to heat up the garage ( bare concrete floor, brick walls and a draughty up & over door ), when I'm done I turn it off

I tapped onto the house Central heating system and put a rad in there....

but roadkill did say he wants to leave it on tickover all the time and you would,nt leave a fan heater on all the time for fear of fire.
fan heater is fine for short periods but i would,nt leave one on all night .
an oil rad with a thermostat would be my best guess. and they are peanuts secondhand

I want to maintain a constant-ish temperature.

I have all my tools out here and my P.C so I would like to maintain a reasonable, minimum temperature (eg 10*C)

That was an option . . . however it would only be heating in the garage while the CH was above minimum temperature inside the house.
It takes a hellof a cold day to make the house drop low enough to fire the heating so it would only be on a small amount of the time.

That was my thinking so far . . .

I paid £15 for an oil filled radiator in a discount shop, about 1.5kw iirc.
Set about 1/2 to 2/3rds of max (to heat approx 150sq/ft) it uses 4 units of leccy per 24 hours (left on 24/7) in a double glazed room.
You have to leave them on as they take an age to warm the room up.
So instead of having a fan heater or whatever on half setting for a couple of hours per day you may as well have one of these on 24 hours per day and keep the temp constant.

You may need a pair though and they may cost a little more each to run if it's badly insulated and droughty.

Good call, better than a convector heater as you are paying to head the element, then once you turn it off, it is off - no further heat is emitted. Where as an oil filled radiator you are paying to heat the element which transfers the heat into the oil. The oil is viscious and emits heat slowly and continues to emit even when you have finished paying to heat the element. I'm telling you this, but I'm sure you know already - but I have a point:

The outside office project I am doing at the moment gets cold too, but today I saw this on HUKD.

2KW SF oil-filled radiator. £25 delivered! I was going to order two, but decided on just the one for now.

Be quick - it's clearance! Similar radiators go for £50/60 from Argos!
