This is going to be expensive.

The Panda clutch has started slipping

I'd normal do this sort of job myself, but a quick trawl of the FIAT forum shows that the gearbox, half shaft and half the ruddy engine bay have to come out

Still In suppose nearly five years round town and 74k miles isn't that bad

Current best quote is Universal Clutch at £290:90 with a two year unlimited mileage warranty

What's a half shaft?

The short "half" shaft from the gearbox that drives the wheel on a FWD car

Yes considering it's nearly 6 hours work with the right tools

Is that just for the clutch or is that clutch and the fitting of it+VAT???

Wendy's Micra's clutch needed doing when she got it (was told it was a noisy thrust Bering on the clutch) and it turned out to be the gearbox as well(which I got from the breakers) My Mot garage who do all our Yank stuff did the whole job for £250 And it was listed in there book as a 4 hour job
Break down of parts used
Clutch  supplied by garage £55 (could have got one from GSF for under £30 but they don't last a year apparently)
Oil for gearbox supplied by garage £20 (as it came from a scrap yard so asked for the oil to be changed)
Labour to remove gearbox and fit new clutch then refit gearbox supplied by customer £180
(I supplied the gear box that cost me £125 from the scrap yard so in reality a cheep £200 car ended up as a £600 but its is a clean strait car and will do my daughter to learn to drive in) So the actual cost of the clutch replacement all in would have been £230

Ah, I assumed it was that but didn't know for sure..

be wary of so called clutch specialists, they tend to use cheap pattern parts and rarely change everything, will probably cost you more in the long run

philoldsmobile

the correct clutch on the panda will likely be a Valeo - they are cheap as chips anyway. the other likely brand you'll find is LUK, but there are only a few companies that make clutches, so i'd be more aware of them just fitting a plate rather than a 3 piece kit, as opposed to the source of the parts themselves.

£290 sounds very cheap - if the panda has a DMF that bill could easily double if it needs one, but some companies offer refurbished DMF's for some cars., my clutch was £800 fitted..(and my flywheel was fine)

auto's ftw,...

until you get the ford auto box shudder of death, and the mystery unexplained swapping of ratios for no reason.. and the weird burning smell. and the repeated visits to the workshop to get it fixed..

ok, anything other than Ford autos FTW...

After three phone calls to Days MK I've given up on them

They haven't even given me the time to tell them what I want, just sorry we are busy and will phone you back in 1/2 an hour and they don't

The more I deal with them the less I like their attitude

EDGE

The ford auto box shudder was a known fluid issue though, once changed it was fine :)

How much does the stealership want to change the clutch ?

Go elsewhere.

which is why they are so busy....avoid stealers at all costs, same parts, same mechanics, twice the cost.

the second time it was changed it was fine, but by then it had nuked the O/D solenoid. so it all had to come apart again - the third time it was done it was fine.. until it started burping fluid out if it stood in traffic (hence the nasty smell)

never come across such a poorly engineered car.. every facet of its mechanical architecture was massively flawed. come on, 140 bhp from 3.8 litres? that's a disgrace...its over a second slower to 60 than a diesel punto!!!

Well I've seen 10 times more Fiats in there than Alfa's !

Sorry PhilO but I'm not begging anyone to be paid to do work for me, surely the most important factor in choosing a garage is trust

philoldsmobile

Mate, you'll go grey with stress trying to get garages to call you back!

Some people said the same things about engine builders, too.
