How do you make a spring that small?

How was it running at the end? Battery powered?

I'm guessing it's running on compressed air

I've seen a similar sized V8 engine with minature spark plugs running on petrol

It's compressed air.
However there is an obviously larger, hand built v12 that is proper internal combustion:
