I want access constantly to them, the backing up isn't an issue as it's just music, I for one am not too fussed if one day I lose it. I simply use it all the time....

Sounds good Andy, although just as complicated (I got confused about 1/3 of the way through!).

I have seen some online that say No HDD. So what is it?!

I think I might go for the £120 ish one. So, I simply buy one, plug it into my router and set it as my home folder for my i-Tunes?

Only just seen this...

That Synology is a single drive enclosure, basically you buy it and a plain hard drive like you stick in your pc and put it inside it (it just plugs in).  then yes, plug it into your router and enjoy.
I jave a 4 bay (ie takes 4 hard drives and makes them all look like one big one) version of that.  The software features are the same.

If you buy a Synology and have trouble setting it up (it's fairly easy actually as its all web based) let me know and I'll help you out.  Compared to Maplins boxes etc that are cheaper it is a far more advanced thing...

My question is can these be setup in RAID1 with the drives in pairs so that, in the example above (8TB box) it would end up with a 4TB capacity spread across 2 pairs of drives? or would you just end up with 4 copies of everything and a 2TB capacity?

Anyone know?

Looking at the specs and RAID info, RAID 1 setup would mirror to all discs from my understanding - i.e. 2tb space but 4 copies, whereas RAID 5 maybe the better option as that gives you the redundancy but will give you more than 2gb space (AFAIK) and you'll be able to 'loose' 1 disc and still have all the data...

Thanks Andy.... Will save up and buy the right one.... Wasn't happy with the reviews of the Maplin sold one due to using a Mac....

im still saving for one of the synergy boxes and a brace of hard drives

What about Apples Time Capsule?

Can that be used as a NAS hard drive?

That Pogoplug thing no good for you then? Apparently you can hook on a hub, and then your storage abilities are only limited to just how many drives you can hook on to it.

Also does a sort of RAID 1 as well using the "ActiveCopy" functionality
