Looking for ideas, or advice on making a structure to put in my front garden for mine and possibly my dads Camaros.

Both having t-tops, and not wanting to get them too wet, I'm looking at a semi permanent structure that can be disassembled/modified to suit.

Been looking at things like this:

Only thing that is putting me off is whether its strong enough. I'd be willing to reinforce the mother, but whether it would see out a winter or two of use.

Also thinking 2.65M is a bit high and would prefer to keep it on the low side, so potentially shortening the legs would be on the cars.

According the planning laws, it meets all the criteria apart from where its location would be, which will be further forward than the front wall of the house.

So what have you guys done, or seen be done, and any links to other places where people sell these type of tents/car ports.

I shall be following this thread with interest

I want to do something similar for the Mustang as it wont quite fit in the garage...at least not if I want to keep a spanner in there as well.

I can't really afford to have someone build a carport at the moment and don't really have the skills to design and build my own

EDIT:  Mind you this isn't silly money

If it's outside the front of your house you'll almost certainly need planning approval.

On a temporary basis it'd be O.K as the council can't just make you take it down there and then - they'd need to serve you notice, hence delays, blah blah blah.

If you're looking for something for a couple of years then forget anything like that.  It won't last.

You'll need to be looking at a canvas-based outer for it to last that long.

Re-enforcing won't do much, either, as I found out . . It may delay the end but not prevent it.

If you're serious, I'd visit you local council and discuss it with someone in the planning department (it's free).

If I were you I'd be thinking of a timber construction myself, with a polycarb roof or similar.  You could probably get something together for around £500, assuming you DIY it.

You'd need a bit more than a 1600mm projection, though.  More like 2500mm

This is true, probably wouldn't work where the car has to sit anyway..unless we open up the passage along the other side of the house. (to get the bins in and out without moving the car each time)

Having looked at the pretty impressive planning website, it did tell me anything in the front requires planning approval, which is made even harder by my area being an AONB.

My original plan was for a simple free standing car port area down the front side of the garden. Made up of 4x4 type fence posts and socketed into the ground, it would've run the entire length of the front area, with 3ish M gaps, that way up to about 4 cars could be parked under it in a stable type way.

This definitely would need planning but would also require some wonga and possibly some knowledge of how to out those things up. All of which I'm not to good at. Eager to learn though.

Sounds good.

You'd be surprised how cheap it can be.  I've done similar more than once using 3x3 fence posts.

Hang on . . . .

Pimpin' (although you don't have to go that far !)

Motorama

I know a few guys use these, they are heavy duty and strong, only takes 4 sleepers to hold them down and if you put ply flooring down they dont sweat inside.
