Ok, step daughter needs another car on the grounds that the worthless piece of rotten skin she is married to (soon to be unmarried to) to has buggered off with theirs.

Budget around £1000 but prefer to get change. Doesn't need to be big; Polo, Focus, Astra size etc. What are the recommendations?

Andy

Small modern cars with small engines are holding their value at the moment, for that amount anything near modern will have RK style mileage unfortunately.

However if thats not a problem, a MK1 / 1.5 Focus with something like a 1.6 litre Zetec shouldn't be too hard to find, but expect around 100k mileage. Pretty good cars, simple engine, just make sure the timing belts been done as that'll be the next biggest expense around the mileage.

Anything VW will be a bit harder I think as they tend to hold their value better. You're also up against those VW tw@ts like to do that weird sh!t where they get roof rack, pile crap on it and drive it to a show after lowering it so it rests on the arches and put a bunch of stickers on it...

Considered French?

You'll get a good Focus, as Andy says, for change of a grand.

I picked up Sammy's for about £700 and it's been a good little car.

Jo

Def Focus, cheap and very reliable

Big Mouse

I've found a couple of Focus to look at within the budget, with 1.6 zetec so will go and take a gander - thanks all

Fieldy

The Zetec engines are awesome, reliable and easy to maintain.

Found a 2000 1.8 zetec for £800. 12 months mot, 6 months tax, 92k, new tyres, good paintwork, alloys.

All went well until daughter in law drove it into a pothole on the way home and shredded a new tyre Needs a new window regulator but only an hours work to replace that.

Andy

Oh buggeration! At 2000 I can't remember if they had the old style front wishbones or the modern flat round cylinder types. Either way, just give the front arm a once over, mine needed changing after a monstrous pothole incident.

Sounds a bloody good find though! Tell her to keep check on the timing belt as that'll be the only thing that'll need doing around this time if it hasn't been done. Recommended 10 yrs, or 100k Miles, which ever comes first.

Big Mouse

hahaha, this had a monstrous pothole incident about 10 minutes after picking it up - my stapdaughter got in it, drove it home straight into a pothole, fortunately didn't damage the suspension but shagged the brand new tyre.

I checked the timing belt, done at 70k. Left the girls to check the electrickery stuff while I checked the engine, box and underside, wheels etc. Told them check the lights, windows, radio etc etc

Then an hour later the drivers side window is jammed; I said its just unlucky that it went after we bought it. Oh no, they said we never checked that one, just the other three!!!! What are women's brains made of?????
