The boffins at Nascar decided that they needed a proper rolling road to test the wind flow under the cars at 180mph
So they dreamt up this little baby with a 1mm thick steel belt rolling surface :

Now your thinking that the car above is a scale model

Think BIG Thing VERY BIG

Anyone fancy a test drive

ianjpage

wholly cr*p that is massive - i like the idea tho

Pod

Pretty damn impressive bit of kit.
Although,
1. I don't fancy sitting so close to it as that bloke is
2. Even if the belt goes round at 180mph, there won't be any wind under the car to measure?!

Looking at the first picture the car appears to be teathered by wire ropes in the middle and it looks like it's still being commissioned by the manufacturer before being built into a wind tunnel, the news artical said it was going to be working by fall 2007

Hmm...

I've seen steel laser printer belts let go and destroy all around them (could take your head off).
No chance would I stand near that...

Is the car held? what happens if the belt jams does the car do a Duke of Hazzard?

I still want to have a go though

Looks like the belt wasn't running in the picture with the guy in it.

Very cool idea . . . TBH, it amazes me it hasn't already been done . . .
