Anyone know much about A6's?
A friend back in the UK wants an '99-'00 Audi A6, he is driving a 2001 Transit and doesnt need a van anymore. I dont know anything about them apart from they seem quite cheap for some reason??

Anyone know anything about em??

Or any other ideas of a nice comfy saloon for around 2k?

Servicing can be very steep price wise, but I don't know much more. Think it was an A6 myself and FBF went to Germany in, fantastic motor....

How is Dan?? havnt spoke to him for years !!

Fieldy

He's alright

Give him a bell if you want some work

I know enough not to buy one...

Actually I'm not very familiar with the A6, however friends with late 90s to current Audi A4's and A8's have experienced frequent and expensive (or inconvenient if under warranty) repairs.

I'm always conscious of the fact that someone looking to spend that sort of money (10 year old car) clearly doesn't really have the money to fix it or maintain it properly.  The problem is that while the car may be cheap to buy due to age, the parts costs are in line with a new £40k vehicle and stuff does wear out and 10 years is when the bills really start to come imho.

ive got a outback, which is basically a legacy estate with a bit more off road credentials. i cant fault it.
lovely understated cars.

I'd agree with that, Arts was broken when he bought it too...

i've never been a fan of more modern audi's, they aren't as reliable as you'd like, and oh so indescribably boring.

last real audi was the 100 - you'd be better off with a merc E class, the legacy would also be a good choice.

mine is a treat to own and drive,

but it is the highly rated 5cyl tdi c4, a6 [facelifted audi 100] nearly 30k when new,

a lot of audi stuff got over engineered after 1999, with many silly faults, and some crap parts, plastic impellers on waterpumps,

mine had a new head fitted, as it had a cambelt let go, and had poss overheated, water pump on the belt,

it been without a fault in the year ive had it,

its been a revelation for an old car with 149k on the clock, 52 mpg on the motorway, 40 around town,,,, and sh!t loads of talks and power when ya boot it...

My bosses brand new A6 definitely comes under the dull category.
Lots of toys but the interior (Switch Gear) is cheap and nasty compared to the new Jags and Land Rovers.  You can almost see daylight through some of the gaps round those switches!
Has a nice brushed aluminium effect around the centre console and trim but the  display dash looks like it was sprayed silver from an aerosol can.

And I'm quite a fan of Audi's!!

And for a 2.0 diesel the MPG is appalling!  Got about 45MPG on a run driving like an old man!   Fast though

The rims and dark metallic green paint is awesome though

My A6 was a joy to drive and never gave me any problems at all. The cabin was laid out better than most cars I've ever owned and the build quality was far superior to the equivalent mercedes, which has really gone downhill in the last few years

I'm willing to bet that anyone buying a 10 yr old Audi won't be taking it to a main dealer for servicing so the service costs don't come into it.

I'd go for the TDi with a decent service history

We had a 53 plate one a few years back. The quality much better.  The auto box was rubbish though.
