A good quality, multi-regional (or readily hackable) DVD player ?

It must be slim-line and pretty (Sammy's requirements).

Also preferabley have upscaling and HDMI thing-me-bob output.

Budget is under £100.

We was looking at a excellent Sony one but it cannot be hacked.

Then we found a Philips, but it's an older model and there's been issues with it, on reading reviews . . . .

I'm a fan of Toshiba products but their DVD players can rarely be hacked to multi-regional.

So.

Recommendations, please . . .

cant you hack the one you got now?

We've got Graeme's old one at the mo.

But it's not very user-friendly, the layer changes are poor and the constant default to subtitles is beyond irritating.

Plus it was only temporary.

We're planning on buying an uber LCD TV next year so a new DVDP now makes sense.

I've also got a as-new Toshiba DVDP but it can't be hacked !

I would have said Toshiba...

I have a Sony which I think is pants in comparison with the Tosh.

Pioneer used to make good stuff and Samsung seem pretty decent for most things nowadays (don't know what their DVD players are like)...

Not totally sure if it will play other regions but to be honest, you can just download anything and burn it to a dvd then watch it on the above player.

If you're only after a player I'd recommend the Samsung DVD 1080P8, and I know the multi-region hack works first-hand :)  Image quality's good too, lots of good reviews.

Cheers, mate.

I've had my Panasonic Multi-region player for nearly 10 years now and (touch wood) its still going strong, even with the heavy use it gets.  Normally about 3hrs per day.  My 4:3 Panasonic Telly that I bought when I was 17 is also still doing ok, its on its 2nd remote though and the SCART sockets are just beginning to get a bit tempermental

Samsung DVD 1080P8

Quoting: Review
If you're looking for a simple, reasonably-priced DVD upscaler to pair with your Full HD TV, then Samsung's DVD-1080P8 is a solid choice. It does all the DVD basics with minimal hassle and offers superb picture quality, but the icing on the cake is its stylish design, which makes it one of the best-looking sub-£100 players around.

Sounds perfect.

I'm off to buy one . . . .

Can you PM me the hack you used ?

I'm getting conflicting info from the 'net.

Carl 88GTA

glad to help

The multi-region code I used was from posts #2 and #3 in http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=772069\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">this thread

Excellent.

Cheers, matey.

Now to send the other half out to buy it.

Weeeeelllll.

The DVD player arrived on Thursday . . . . problem is It ain't a 1080P8 - it's a 1080PK . . . and the PK does NOT have a multi-region hack !

So I contact Pixmania and discover that they truly do have the worst customer services EVER.

Seriously - google "Pixmania customer services" and you'll see no end of unfortunate tales of people being f*cked about by them.

So it's going back . . . not sure what's the deal, yet but it doesn't help that I'm going on holiday on wednesday, either, and can't be here for a collection so need to post the item (at my cost) instead !

Kenny

I can recommend the philips dvp5980.  Its very good, has 1080P upscale and region 0 hack is available.
