Ignoring suspiciously skewed 5th gear tests of modern small cars into old big cars, lets play this game with a 2009 small car and a 2009 large car...

(not Escalade large though as that would not be pretty and kill sales of small cars forever).

Smart car too small and C-Class too big?  Cheating you think?  Not at all, it could happen...  But OK...

So to anyone who goes on about their 5 star NCAP rated coffin car...
Those ratings are based on crashing 2 of the same thing into each other and you gets points for daft stuff like seatbelt bongers.

Smaller car meets larger car has nothing to do with anytinhg except physics.  If ya don't like that rule don't blame me, blame Isaac Newton...

big cars ftw !!!

wonder how a new big car would fair against an old mini or 2cv !!!!!!!

Can't see you tube at work, but there was that crash test between an F150 and a new mini a while back

The Mini came out tops, because you also have to factor in structural integerity etc and that Chinese Brillance large Saloon that folded like cardboard

HardRockCamaro

That's why they tested 2 *cars* from the same manufacturer each time...

That makes sense

Never liked apples anyway

i did a LOT of crash test analysis at uni and its shocking what you can get away with in smaller cars... but... crash it in to something bigger and stronger and more importantly, better engineered, and the small car is shafted each time....

ianjpage

big car ftw then i think!!

Do have to say its cool watching the slow impact video and just seeing how it deforms and brakes up!

If you like that see this:

Larger small car with smaller big car:

The Camry only scored acceptable for some reason (maybe as the mass of the cars starts to get closer) but they should have changed the rating on the Yaris to Epic Fail...

Here's one of a 2000 STS hitting a smaller Honda (albeit of 1992 vintage so a little unfair):

Their estimated camera position was a bit off as the Caddy ploughed through the Honda    but you can see the A pillar of the Honda folding up so you get the jist...

philoldsmobile

basic physics, the object with more mass will try and move through the object with less mass... so the small car needs to be MUCH stronger to repel the larger object.

larger cars FTW!

How about this for the ultimate big vs small. Read about these crash tests in Autotrader, its actually really, really shocking. Particularly the in car shot. The dummys face actually falls off.
