Mercedes really are the milage champions - with 275,000 miles i'd be completely confident in that car - i've heard of 6 cylinder Mercs going to double that without a rebuild.

My brother has a 1997 Merc E300 turbodiesel with 180,000 miles on it. the body has a couple of scabs, though nothing major, and it runs and drives like a brand new car, they really are well engineered.

the plus side is a mega mile Mercedes can be a real bargain - people shy away from cars with that sort of milage on them, but it will be fine, so you can snag them for absolutely no money at all.

I posted a Merc on here before I am sure that had done 500,000 miles

Yah, I was pretty impressed.. The guy said he was waiting for the engine to blow up before getting a new car but it just doesn't want to!

Now THAT's servicing.

Don't do it - just buy a new one.

In our local paper there is an article about a E32 BMW that has done over a million miles on the original engine etc

My Diesel BMW has done 252,000 and still runs drives as new

you wont get that out of the newer BMW diesels - I once heard the 2 liter diesel described as a "hand grenade with the pin pulled"

this is the gist of the problem, and its a big one, with almost all modern (2002 i believe) onwards cars involved...the BMW dealership opposite work seems to have  E46 3 series come in on a daily basis on the back of flatbeds. much more so than any other model.

Hello,

For owners of BMW 320d models, you may wish to look at various BMW forums like BMWland.

Our 2003 BMW 320d Sport, which we purchased new from Eastern BMW in Edinburgh, and which has covered a mere 27,900 miles suddenly ran very roughly.

It appears that a part of the 'swirl flap' in the inlet manifold has broken and part of the flap was ingested into the engine, causing damage to the piston, cylinder etc. It wouod also appear from the web forums that this is a very common problem with a few of BMW diesel models.

While BMW agreed on a "goodwill basis" to cover the cost of the engine parts and labour, Eastern BMW have still attempted to charge us £874.26 for various works including the investigation to diagnose the problem. We came to a stalemate situation last night at the dealership, where I would not pay and they would not release the car. I said for them to keep the car!

If you have a Diesel BMW you may wish to contact BMW to voice concerns. You may have ticking bomb under your bonnet, simply waiting to go off!

As an aside, while every gasket and bolt used in the transfer of parts from one engine to the other, there is no mention of oil, oil filter or coolant. Surely it would not be the practise to put old oil from a damaged engine into a new engine?

Cheers,
