All from one device

Not a bad idea.  Probably cheaper than getting all the equivalent gear as optional extras.

Does mean you have to carry it around with you though.

This is what I was thinking..

As soon as a sees it I'd probably build in a 'flap' or cover so it is not always on display?

Of course you can do all of that with your mobile phone at a fraction of the cost and you generally carry it around with you anyway.
And you don't have to chop up your dash.

I could be wrong but its probably not designed with in-car environmental specifications in mind.  eg. -40*C +85*C (depending on position in vehicle) and humidity

My iPhone does everything I could want in the car, gives me (very good) satnav, plays my music through my stereo, lets me make hands free calls, can even look stuff up on the web or do email (well, if you pull over anyway).

Don't get me wrong, the larger screen of the iPad with some custom apps would make a great machine you could easily use as you drive (big buttons) and with no moving parts is probably a great choice for an in-car computer.  Wouldn't hack up a car to fit one mind...

Eek, Apple have admitted the first problem with the iPad. It's deaf!

The Wi-fi appears to be hit and miss as to whether it'll crank up after waking or start up.

As ever with Apple products or any new technologies, give it 6 months for them to fix all the problems.
