wind's picked up. Gazebo being ripped apart

Well up here in Gaydon the torrential rain has stopped and the sun's come out...still quite windy though

Roadkill

Wind has died down . . . still very breezy (too bad to paint in considering the damage to the gazebo) but the gazebo isn't at risk of taking off, now !

Speaking of damage . . . we have some ripped ties, a shredded corner or two and a buckled pole . . . among other things.
The wind can freely blow through it at the moment so before painting I'll have to sort that . . .

The whole body shell has now been flatted with 600-grit.  Went through in a few places so just building them up with a bit of high-build before finishing flatting entirely.

I need to have a wipe-down and see if it dries in time for paint this evening (risky).

Roadkill

Had a try out with the devilbiss on the underside of the bonnet and was getting major splatter.
Took it apart and did some Googling.

Today I had no one to look after Jensen until around 2ish.  Did some strengthening to the gazebo ..... nearly fainted in the heat under there ..... also hadn't eaten in over a day so decided to give in and get some lunch.

Stripped the devilbiss down again before trying and found (eventually and given my complete lack of knowledge on paint guns) that there were two seals missing !   No chance of getting any after 5 on a Saturday so decided to make some up.   Long story short, the gun appears to be working now.  However it'd gotten too late to paint so the best I could do was mask up ready for an early start tomorrow .....

So no real progress in nearly two days.

Ahh that'd certainly cause issues - how'd you find out - google or yer brother ?

I'll post pictures later but there's now Black stuff all over the Camaro !

The main body shell and front wings are done.  Got the rear bumper, two lower door trims and two rear lower panel trims done, too last night.

Bonnet was done underside and top side but got a drip off of the gun while finishing the top so will probably need to sort that before calling it done.

HVLP / Devilbiss Verdict :

(Material: Cellulose - still legal for use on cars over 25 years old - AFAIK)

With experience, now, in painting cars in rattle cans AND by a gun my comments are as follows (in case anyone else is considering it . . ):

A gun will get you faster results, possibly more even finish, use less paint and will create less overspray/paint dust (in the air and on the floor).

However.

You will have to play with the gun to get it set up.  You'll need a decent compressor, lines, water trap(s) and a gun, obviously - not cheap if you can't borrow it.
Rattlecans are smaller and easier, IMO, to manouervre it tight spaces.  Also they're lighter and after 4 hours of wet sanding the last thing you want is to paint a roof, arm out-stretched, with a gun and full pot of paint hanging off of it !!!
Oddly, I also got less drips and runs from rattlecans, too . . . I put the runs down to the cramped environment but the drips from the gun were unforgivable.

Cost of paint . . ? . . . Well it'll take about 35 rattlecans (17.5 litres) to do a 2-door coupe properly and by the time I've finished only 4.5 litres (+ thinners) in cellulose.
We're talking satin black so the rattlecans would be around £90, whereas the paint and thinners cost me £85.

To summarise :

I'll certainly be looking to pick up a HVLP gun over the coming months just in case I need to do this again so, despite my complaints, that's the direction i'll head.
That said there is certainly still a place for rattlecan jobs, IMO . . . I would certainly still consider it if the air equipment simply wasn't at hand.

Firstly let me introduce my tools . . .

Borrowed DeVilbiss (note homemade seal at the back of the nozzle) :

Ray's borrowed Compressor - Small but Mighty :

Re-installing the rear bumper shaper thingy (I had to drill out the rivets but the holes took a M6 thread perfectly !!)

My Secondary Paint booth (The whole garden is covered, now !!!)

Black !! (with re-installed rear bumper) :

Bonnet (both sides) is now done.  Lower rocker trims done.  Spoiler done.  Both Mirrors and gas door done - but not checked properly as it was dark - so who knows !?

Can't wait to get the bonnet back on . . . that'll "Do it", I reckon . . . (That's tomorrow's job, BTW, Ian).

EDIT - As well as wet sanding the nosecone and chin spoiler.

Bonnet back on this evening but no more painting done.  It'll be a major battle to get anymore done at all before the wedding.

That said I hope to some how get the tail gate painted and re fitted and the nose cone and front lower spoiler painted too.  Really unlikely, though.

Rob

Suits the Camaro more than the Firebird.  Just doesn't look quite right....

FUBAR

Looking Good dean! Very

Re Robs post above, I think one of the main differences there is the black wheels, it needs some contrast imo.
It's the time that we kill that keeps us alive...

Bit more rubbing down done.  Nothing more painted . . . .

Yet.

LOL there is always tomorrow and (most of) saturday

Roadkill

Nosecone, front splitter and tailgate painted tonight . . . not a clue how it went as it was pitch black by the time I came to do the second coat !!

Really shouldn't've started painting so late, but -

Will see how it looks when it's light.

If the tailgate's O.K I want to get it on the car today . . . .

sounds like got most of it done then - although uber late / early post means that must have been an epic evening!!

that it looks good.
