Well 'twas fun while it lasted, been there nearly 12 months now but me contract at oxford uni is up at the end of the 1st week in October, and won't be extended (thats when the budget / money runs out and there will not be any more avail - we been categorically told this from a very high level ) so time to find another job (oh joy)

If anyone knows of any suitable jobs local to MK lemme know please - definately want a job without the 1hr plus commute each way daily!!

(note to self - update CV!)

Cunning Plan

If you know anything about vehicle electronics come work with me - we get 3k to share between us as an employee introduction bonus

Shame though dude, I know what it is like - not only the job hunting but the commute too

What sort of engineers?

NOT the kind we are, I'd guess . . . . don't let me get into a PhilO-type rant about how everyone is an Engineer thesedays despite having no Engineering qualifications . . . . It just makes us real Engineers look bad.

I don't call myself a Nuclear Physicist because I know very little about Nuclear Physics . . . . why do people think it's O.K to call themselves Engineers when they don't even know what's the correct size drill for a 5/8" UNC tap ?

HardRockCamaro

Because they're software engineers and you'e asking a hardware question...

(sorry, I have a software engineering degree so that joke kills me... )

Will keep my ear to the ground.  Were only employing Program Managers and Mechanical Engineers at the moment.

Surely it depends what your engineering...

Roadkill

As far as I'm concerned Engineering is a mechanical term.

Apart from assembling P.Cs (plugs and sockets) etc there's no physical mechanics - merely programming / maintaining etc . . . . That's a technical role so maybe should come with a technicians title ?

"Software Technician" would be more apt, in this case, no ?

I fail to see how it gains an Engineering title.

So a gardener could call himself a "Landscape Engineer" ? (which, I think, given the broad array of work gardeners do is more suitable than calling a Software Programmer an Engineer).

A Binman a "Waste Disposal Engineer" ?

A Toilet Cleaner a "Hygiene Maintainance Engineer" ?

Titsy

An Engineer is someone who is trained or professionally engaged in a branch of engineering.

Engineering is the application of scientific and mathematical principles to practical ends such as the design, manufacture, and operation of efficient and economical structures, machines, processes, and systems.

Modern engineering systems most offen require an element of software/firmware to function and so YES you can be a software engineer...

but NO, a binman is not a "waste disposal engineer".  I would hawever assosiate the title with someone who designs or maintains the tools of the binman's trade.

There are no scientific or mathematical priciples in removing shit stains from a toilet bowl, there is no technical element what so ever, so no, just a cleaner...

HardRockCamaro

A technician maintains stuff, engineers develop it.

Engineering itself is not a mechanical term, a mechanical engineer is a sub type of "engineer".

I agree with Titsy.

Interestingly a Software Engineering degree comes under the sciences, ie a BSc or MSc as opposed to a BEng or MEng.

ianjpage

wow this has kinda gone OD a little

Cheers to those who keeping eye / ear out

HardRockCamaro

Hehe!

And a burger flipper is not a grill technician either!

I disagree. Their are mathematical principles at work in scrubbing a toilet bowl - knowing how hard to scrub a stain with a loo brush to stop it flicking back in your eyes requires as much thought as tightening a bolt without snapping the head off - both leave you in the sh*t if your calculations are wrong
