Must trusty 18 month old daily push bike ( aka The Nail ) finally expired on the way to the gym this morning

The front aluminium rim collasped after wearing through, so with no back or front brakes, buckled wheels, oval pedal crank and jumping gears I think it's time to pension her off

I haven't even been locking her for the last two months in the hope that somebody would steal it

daveyboy

put it on ebay.
someone will come all the way from inverness if they think they are getting a bargain.

18 months old and it's fecked?  I thought bikes were supposed to be good for the environment?  If that's all they last in daily use I remain unconvinced...

FUBAR

My Diamondback DB05 is still going well after 3 years, (and at least 1 thorough service @ a shop) and that easily sees 1200 miles a year.... the same as the IROC does...

Damn never though of it like that before, last year I cycled further that I drove...

I have a rule with new bikes, if its under £250 its utter garbage, mine was £320 and its suitable.  the brakes aren't great but rest of it is fine
It's the time that we kill that keeps us alive...

thats really the wrong way round!!!

I was told you need to spend upwards of £300 to get anything half decent and to not even bother with anything cheaper than that.
I spent £360 on my Mongoose Super Tyax as an end of year clearance.  I did 350 miles on it within about 3 months and have barely used it since...
Next year I plan on making the effort, easy now I have a bike rack for the Jeep so I can go places further afield with it.

Incursus

My £50 bike is still going after 3 years...well as going as it was when I got it.

Done at least 100 miles

I thought for a moment something nasty had happened to former bike racer Naill McKenzie

It's had a hard life

Chained outside all it's life and spending most of it's time going up hill ( hence the gear set and pedal cranks went ) or downhill hence why the wheel rims wore through

Only cost £70 new did about 3,000 miles so I can't complain

HardRockCamaro

As with your laptops I'm gonna see how much money you save by buying the cheapest possible item every 18 months instead of spending 3 or 4 times the amount and (maybe) only doing it once...

Well we will only have to wait 18 months because my new bike is a £450 Claud Butler, which has now spent 2 days outside

I've had a couple of £200/£300 bikes and they don't last much longer

F Body

I know it's an old fashioned saying but " They don't make them like they used to ! "

Even the Claud Butler has plastic gears wheels with moulded in bearings

My old beyatch (sanya) is still going strong, and still looks like new. the Honda equivalent costs 4 times as much, is built in Brazil and is no better...

Although it still often applies (cars are a perfect example), you don't always get what you pay for, and the quality of cheaper goods is improving rapidly..

Here is the "Nail" awaiting her final fate outside the bike sheds at work :

She has a one stay of execution before she's put into the crusher

Yes but 15 years from now the Honda will be still going, not so sure about your Chinese special.  Anything will survive the first few years.

Look at FBody's "kettle".  Even as as copy of a Japanese engine (so they didn't need to design anything) it still overheated.  The Honda (or whatever it was based on) sure doesn't...

the kettle WAS a honda (650 Hawk)  the beyatch was the honda copy, and never had an issue. you'd be very surprised how good some chinese bikes are.

you pay a lot for a brand sometimes....

HardRockCamaro

Ah!  I thought the kettle was the chinese one...

My BMX was over £300 (Thanks to the wife!), and has seen only a few miles and lives in the warmth of my home behind the sofa....

We The People - Justice edition

HardRockCamaro

That's seriously cool!

EDGE

Bet it ******* handles just as sharp too

Will last for years and cost me no extra after purchase, plus, it is seriously quick. Means getting around town is easier than the Mondy or Astro Van

EDGE

Oh, I can imagine, although a fiesta is more fun to jump off home made ramps !!

I had a bmx first time round, and in fact, just found one exactly the same in a charity shop so I bought it for the wife!!  It's most 80s !!!

Fieldy

Long frame, light weight aluminium frame and suede seat, seriously, it is suede...
