Annnnyyyywaaayy . . . . .

Back on topic.

As young Jensen's birth grows ever closer I'm looking for a more modern vehicle to replace the Coupe.

I'm after a '04 (onwards) Mondeo TDCi (estate) if anyone knows of one going - let me know

I'm writing out an advert for the Coupe now - it'll be going up on a few forums this week and if I have no joy it'll go on ebay early next month.

Bloody sprog !!!

Andy

In all seriousness, hmm!

I recently took on my brothers car that I want to get shot of ASAP, so I'll be looking for something to replace it.

What are you looking for for it? Also details please?

Weeeelll.

After careful consideration the Mondy, quite simply, was coming out on top.

What can I say ?

I'll post up the details shortly under a new thread.

Price ? - If we're talking cash it'll be under a grand - she's a damn nice car and - although said too much - I will be truly gutted to see her go.

Out of all the "cheap" Yanks I've owned she's the best one by far.

Alas.

It's time to settle down.

Jensen will need a baby seat in a car - the '58 doesn't have seat belts and the Z28 doesn't have rear seats !!!

You've got the slightly older shape ones haven't you ?

Cunning Plan

Andy had the Mk1, I've got the MK2 (which is practically the same, but facelift).

You want the MK3 from what you are saying.

MK4 is what I would like next, but too expensive for me

Yup, sounds about right.

Motorama

we had a MK3 53 plate TDCI Mondeo Ghia estate for a couple of years, did 40k miles in it, cracking car, very comfortable, fast and economical. Timing chain too so no belt to replace or worry about. We never put a spanner to it for the whole time we had it other than servicing, sold it locally to my best mates sister 2 years ago and she's had no bother with it either, would think it would be on 150k by now

Andy

Oi! I do not have a MK1!

Both of mine are Mk2, the diesel is the 1.8 TDi unit from the '75' Escort vans, and the other is a 1.8 Zetec.

The diesel has a shot alternator, not a big problem, but to get to the pulley you have to take off the A/C compressor, which just so happens to be bodged on the front. I have come up with a way of doing it, just haven't had the time/enthusiam to do it yet.

The petrol one I got off my brother just before he emigrated. It had a 'damp' issue. This turned out to be more of a flood issue. Both the pollen filter housing and boot were letting in water. After completely stripping the inside did i find the level of damage which is a rusted through floor (drivers side rear) My friend doesn't think it'll fail an MOT as its only a small hole and far enough away from any secure fixings. All the same, I just don't like it. Fix almost all of the leaks, apart from a small one in the front passenger footwell that only wheeps in heavy rain and when driving. I'm buggered if i can find it though.

The MK3 you have to be careful about. The early diesels weren't Common rail (i believe) and are knownw for having an injector fault. If its had miles put on it and it hasn't been done, be weary. The other issue is the clutch and DMF. If one has to be replaced, its avised the other is too. A friend with a 53 plate had the dreaded DMF knock on his and the bill with clutch was just shy of a £1k.

Other than that, they are known to be pretty sweet cars, always go for the 130 model as if you go for the 115, it's like going for the V6 in a third gen, when in Rome etc.

Those MK4's are massive, how many kids are you planning on having

we had a mk 3 2l tdci ghia estate,  for a while,
it was great on fuel... a nice drive too,
watch out for the duel mass flywheel problems though...

I have mentioned the DMF issue to deano, sadly its a problem on all modern diesels, as they all have them, and by nature diesels are tough on a dual mass.

the vectra suffers especially badly, there are some true horror stories out there, with appalling customer backup, so the mondeo is definitely a better option.

I've read the '04 onwards had the TDCi's and they are the ones to go for.

similar to this...

That's a bloody good price.

If I had the cash now I'd be on that like a fly on $hit.

I had 3 Vectra diesel estates from new, a 1998, a 2001 and a 2004, I racked up almost 300k miles each on the first 2 and 150k on the last one before I packed up the courier work and never put a clutch in any of them let alone a DMF. I actual fact the 98 and 01 performed absolutely without fault the whole time. All had the later DI engine which also has timing chain and not a belt.

Useful first hand experience.  Thank you, gents.

Incursus

I drove our old Engineering Managers MK3 TDCI Mondeo it was considerably nicer to drive than our Office Managers X-Type Jag.

Been looking at Cadillac CTS's today (on the web)

One day perhaps...maybe another 5 years as I much prefer the look of the 2nd Gen

I've read the '04 onwards had the TDCi's and they are the ones to go for.

The cross over year was circa 2003-2004 where they moved to the more reliable TDCi engines.

It's a CAT D so go over it thoroughly if you are thinking of it, even with that though, the price does seem a bit too good to be true.

Saying that, it's not just the DMF now, on some of the new diesels there's a new particulate filter or something which is a new expensive fix.

It had a similar chassis or so I've read.

Interesting fact, the Mondeo entered into the Ford line up as a car that could be sold Worldwide but largely in the Americas, Europe and Australian markets under the Mondeo name (means Worldwide in Latin or something). That holds true except in the USA where it's called a Contour.
