A service?

Nah, that's yearly in July.

I've been doing mine twice a year..between 10-15k miles.

Roadkill

I figure mine's so old every 25,000-odd miles will be O.K.

Passed 220,000 miles yesterday !!!

Clutch isn't sounding too healthy these days but I'll keep going til it falls apart !!!

Roadkill

After a week's rest the noise from the clutch has gone away (for now) !!!

She's officially done the distance to the moon today at 221,600 Miles.

Rear brakes squeak every now and then so next time I get a minute and it's not p!ssing down . . . . . . .

Another couple of years'll sort that.

1999 Jeep Cherokee XJ (modern classic daily driver)

Fieldy

Yep, twice the miles of mine.
Still prefer my mk2 over my wife's mk3 but hey ho, I still haven't even serviced my mk2, think I've done about 35k miles since buying it, over 3 years.

The mk3 we have has been booked in for a service, figured I owed it one as it only had 2 advisories for its mot, which I knew about both before putting it in.

More like 3-4 years at my current rate... I don't expect it to last that long though.

That's what I said nearly 50,000 miles ago !

Indeed, you never know.

To be fair it's running better than ever and passed it's MOT with flying colours (advisors on front tyres, number plate & inner driveshaft cv boot).

This could be the beginning of the end . . .

Have done a bit of research on the "squeak" I'm getting when changing down gears and it's looking like it could be the clutch slave cylinder.  Not a big deal, maybe, but apparently to replace them you need to drop the gearbox . . . . Which means you should also be replacing the clutch and flywheel too (and the starter motor according to Ford) . . .

Meh.

On top of that I had a flashing glow-plug light about a week ago (symptoms are about 50% engine power, sluggish after 10mph) .  That quickly went away.  Then came back and also put the engine management light on too.

Then they both went out.  Again.

Then last night the plug light came back on.  This morning that light is back out but the engine management light is back on again !

It doesn't seem to be storing any codes, though ??

There seems to be a pattern.  She's never had a physical issue when starting from cold.  Every time the glow plug light has come on (when there's been a loss of power) it's been when she's been started from hot.

Ideas ?

Hmm . . .

Andy

If the slave cylinder is needing replacing then yeah, best to do the clutch to, then if the clutch needs replacing the DMF should be replaced as well. That is what everyone recommends as you don't want to be 10k down the road and find the DMF is borked. Only when it is really borked are you likely to start having issues with the starter. That comment about changing it to is only if the DMF has been playing up for a long time.

Have your tried the in built diagnostics to see if it has any codes? You may need a more specific code reader than just a generic OBD2 one. If the light is coming up a code is being thrown and should be readable somehow. That said, even with the code it could be cryptic what is actually going wrong.

Sounds like one or more of your injectors has worn out, as it sounds identical to the issues I had.  Not surprising really as they normally go somewhere between 100-130K.  Around £500 a pair if you get a garage to do it or you can risk getting used ones off Ebay £150 ish quid each if you wanted to do it yourself...though I can't remember if they have to be coded to the ECU.

Edit: The poor running degraded to almost unusable after around 200 miles for me, that and your clutch issues though...sounds like it's time to find another car..

Apparently (according to the thread added the link to) the dash only display dash fault codes, not engine codes ?

I'll try to get it somewhere to get the codes read.

Steve just happened to have a reader when my car broke, though It was borrowed.

I have some kit I can borrow from work though I've not used it to read DTC's off a Ford before..in theory it should work.

Roadkill

Chris - was yours like it all the time or or-and-on ?  As I've already done 300+ miles since the issue first appeared.

He tried one on mine but apparently the 2005's won't necessarily talk to the reader - only 2006 and onwards.

The first pair started on and off and went to on all the time within 200 mile or so, the second pair was on and off for about a week before I had them replaced.

Pretty sure it's 2003 onwards for the diesel but I can't remember where I read that...also mines 2005 and it read fine.

I don't plan to replace the Mondeo immediately.

As Sammy's not using her Focus, I'll just tax that and use that short-term.  It's not as economical as the Mondeo but there's no point getting another car if one's sitting there taking up space and doing nothing.

The tax runs out on the Mondeo at the end of the month (it's also due a service then, too) so I'm hoping WORSE CASE to try to limp until then.

I've got a 110-mile round trip to do later today and a few 250-milers later this month so we'll see.

Titsy

It might have been the app I was trying to use with it TBH... I couldn't remember which one I used with Chris's car, but have since tried the app we were using on yours with mine and it was a PITA... We can try again if you like. I can do a flying visit (and it will need to be flying) on the way home tonight if you're in before 6pm...

Roadkill

Will be in just before 6pm (unless the car breaks down !)
