Aww man :( sad to see a faithful steed die!

It's a real shame there isn't a solid flywheel replacement. DMFs, DPFs are going to be the things that kill off old faithful diesel cars of the future. Should've stuck with my old diesel Mondy, no ECU, no DMF, no DPF. Nice old fashion turbo unit.

SHE LIVES AGAIN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

O.K, she's still a potential ticking timebomb (isn't every car ?) but by investing just over an hour removing the starter, cleaning it, carefully oiling it and then replacing it - Hey presto ! She starts on the button, without hesitation.

I checked the starters teeth - they actually look really good considering . . . I also tried to force movement on the flywheel but I couldn't feel any.

The next stage, I reckon, will be to thoroughly abuse her tomorrow as I have a LOAD of bricks and concrete that'll need taking to the tip . . . If she survives that I think it's worth trying to MoT her a week early (before the auction ends) and go from there.

meh ....

I loaded her up with concrete on Saturday so she was on the bump-stops and did a run to the tip . . . .

Sunday morning I did the same but this time with mainly bricks (with a little concrete).

Sunday afternoon I picked up 400 litres of top soil and 720 litres of compost (again, very much on the bump-stops) for my parents . . .

She maintained 44mpg throughout !!!

I suppose, as she's still going I should try to book her in for an MoT to see what happens . . . then, based on the outcome, decide whether to pull the auction or not.

Here's a few pics to keep CP happy . . .

The starter - after a good clean out . . took quite a bit of working back-and-forth to get it all moving again . . .

The starter goes somewhere in there . . .

The flywheel . . . not showing signs of excessive tooth wear . . . but

Not bad for about 70 minutes work with only a good squirt of WD40 and a shot of thinners in out-lay.

That is a chunky MOFO of a flywheel

How much would you say the car is worth with an MOT?

Dunno - £300 - £400 spares or repairs . . . Maybe an MoT would be bonus points ???

Believe it or not this year still go for £1500 (with lower miles, obviously) - I was quite surprised . . .

so was the starter, covered in bits of dmf rubber or other stuff ...

Looked like general grease, crap and small traces of metal.

It probably is still the DMF but it's still useable at the moment ......

The DMF has rubber in it? I thought it was glue that failed?

Same here, only the TDCi Mondies had them, before they ran solid flywheels.

Apparently they make the Diesel engine smoother a more passenger friendly regards vibrations from the engine.

I never really noticed much difference and quite often had mine mistaken for a petrol when in it. However outside it sounded like a good old tractor!

Roadkill

Interesting . . . . She took yet more concrete-carrying abuse today before going in for an MoT.

She failed on rear tyres (as suspected), trailing arm and a blow in the back box.

I've already paid the money for the MoT . . . assuming I bodge the back box with a bandage, I'm looking at £90 for tyres plus £40 for the arm (can easily fit that myself).

I'd originally assumed it was one of the main trailing arm bushes but it turns out its the (estate only) lower arm which is an easy fix - bonus !

So £130 to get it through the MoT . . . . . ignoring the DMF - which is noisy - but still behaving fine . . .

Roadkill

Required immediately :

DMF & Clutch kit £218 + £250 for fitting - Ignore that for now
Re-con Stater £50 + £40 for fitting - Removed and Cleaned = £0

Total : £0

Required on or before the 18/12/13 :

Trailing arm bushes £32 + £80 for fitting - £40 for the part, I can fit
Rear brake pads (already bought) - Will get garage to fit £30 (need special tool)
MoT test cost £40 - Already Paid

I also have a wheel bearing on its way out but I'm struggling to pin point which one No mention of this in the MoT  . . . . fronts are cheaper, but with more labour so it's gonna be around £55-£70 parts and labour, too.

Total : £70

The tax is due at the end of December = £96 (for 6 months)

Also two of the tyres, even IF they pass the MoT will need replacing very soon and another one has a puncture/slow leak that needs repair . . . so add another £100 before the end of February . . . For the MoT

It was nearly £1000 a week ago . . . . . It all depends on how long that DMF lasts . . . .

What special tool?  I did mine on the MK3 Mondeo with a pair of long nose pliers...unless they're different on the Estate?

Or you could use an old silicone gun
