My 1.8 petrol is doing 40-42mpg (A roads, 40-60mph - so admittedly the best situation to get high MPG with the engine), but still, '97 petrol estate

REALLY i get average of 29 out of mine....must be summat up with it!

HardRockCamaro

My 1.8 Petrol Focus used to get 42mpg on long motorway runs if I really tried.
But in London rush hour commutes and if I was in a hurry <cough> it got 24mpg...

ianjpage

Hmm might not be anything up then, as my drive is a mix of dual carriageway @ 70, then "A" roads with 30/40/50 limits on, lots of roundabouts, junctions etc so longest 'constant' driving section is 15 mins without slowing / stopping etc....

HardRockCamaro

Around 30 sounds about right.

The 1.6 Astra I had as a hire car did 27mpg average which was in v heavy London traffic as in stop start, and mostly 40-50mph dual carriageways with some 70mph.

Yah that won't be helping.

How much pressure do you put on the accelrator peddle? I hardly ever push mine down more than a quarter, if I do it is to over-take a tractor (lots out this way) or a lorry doing 40mph. As I say, I use the gears to accelarate, hardly taking the car above 2k rpm, then 3k to cruise at 65mph.

Lots of talk on the VW forums at the moment about running old 90s diesels with straight vegetable oil - VW Passats, Golfs, Mercedes, some Fords etc. I used to put a 50/50 mix in my old VW T3 Wedge and I would sure do it again if I had a diesel with a Bosch pump

I have no idea what mine gets, but the rev counter see around 4k revs regularly.... Just sounds nice at that point

Update for the 'Boiz.

Got a lowly 45.5mpg out of the last tank but that, unfortunately, included about 3 hours in various rolling traffic jams last thursday.

The next tank went in on Friday morning and after clocking over 300 miles that day the computer was predicting a range of 780 miles out of the tank !!!

Needless to say that dropped back down to 650 after picking up the trailer, towing the Camaro, hauling half a ton of slate then returning the trailer again.

I'm staying away for 3 days in Southampton this week which is over 200 miles round-trip so I'm hoping to finally see my 50mpg from this tank . . . It'd be even cooler knowing that it came in the same tank as using it for towing.

I'd towed lovely BTW.

I was gonna get some pics of the towing in action but time was limited and the whole sha-bang caused a major clot in our small cul-de-sac.

Roadkill

Last tank saw 646.1 miles  - and that included towing the 'Maro, haulin a trailer and 500kgs of slate !!

51.2 MPG !!!

I don't see me getting much better than that but I'll keep trying.

Current tank isn't looking great - should be 600miles-ish.

Andy

Start duct taping door seams once people get in the car, get your neighbour or friend to seal yours once you're in it. Don't forget the obvious like the bonnet, the gaps around the lights etc. Make sure your tyres are pumped up the bursting, in fact go for that ballon effect, less contact with the road, less rolling resistance. Remove the rear seats, or fold them down. That upright action from them isn't very aerodynamic. Don't brake, turn the engine off when going down hill. Disconnect all the fuses in the box to non essential things, ABS, Airbag etc, all of this eats power off the engine. If you can, just get someone to trailer your car about, this is a dead cert to cover miles without burning fuel.

On a serious note though, have you checked all the filters and that since you got it?

That is terrible. That car is broke. However, I will be a good guy and take it off your hands for you, say £300. It's okay, I don't mind being out of pocket on the deal

No.  It is due a service very soon, too.

I was hoping to average 55MPG so it is a little low.

That said it is high mileage so it's not gonna be at it's prime.

EDIT.

I've had it 6 weeks today and it covered it's 3,000th mile under my ownership today, too, so 500 miles a week should be in the region of 25,000 a year - which is the minimum I'd expect.

HardRockCamaro

If it's all serviced etc then it all comes down to how you drive.  I managed to coax 34mpg out of the IROC *once* but that involved clever forward planning in terms of overtaking slower traffic on the motorway etc and careful use of the throttle downhill to gain speed to go uphill plus letting it naturally slow down a little uphill if necessary.  It's amazing what difference your driving can make though.
I got 33 out of the Cadillac when I did the same and slipstreamed a NAtional Express coach to Birmingham!

Roadkill

Oh, I drive like a saint, believe me.

I know what you're saying about forward planning - I used to get a steady 18.5mpg out of the '86 CDV around town.  But that could drop to 11mpg if you were careless.

Incursus

Drove like a saint with my last tank a good mix of MK and A road (trips to Northampton and Linslade driving at 60mph max and gentle acceleration.

24MPG
23.91 Pence per Mile (fuel at 1.29 per litre)

Normally get 21-22MPG (mostly MK driving)
27ish p/pm (fuel at 1.29 per litre)

using top gear maths, saves me almost a tenner over 300 Miles I think...

Andy

That post deserves a thumbs up for use of smilies...
