Yep!

MK1 Mondeos used to come with a 4x4 option. They're actually quite rare and popular in the culthood.

The floor pan of the Mk2 is identical to the Mk1, so it retains the 'transmission tunnel'. I don't believe there has been a Mk2 with 4x4 running gear as there is something about the fuel tank. Can't remember exactly. Oh and they stick to the road like sh!t to a blanket, apparently.

Yes, very rare indeed.

The prototype was used on an around the world drive that involved a couple of normal Mondeos, a couple of 4x4 versions and some Mavericks.  This was on tv back before the channel tunnel opened (so they drove through) and featured one of the Blue Peter presenters and some other people.
They crossed Siberia with them and almost made it but the after several nights at -72 the engine refused to start after moisture from the exhaust turned to ice and cut it off during the night.  The engine bay was a total block of ice.  With no way to warm it up they eventually had to call it a day and continue in the Mavericks and Ural trucks.  The Ford mechanic that went along with them was virtually in tears as he had done everything he could to keep them going and the rest of the team admitted it was amazing he had even got it that far as manufacturers only test to around -36 and the russian driver was really beating on it all the way as well.  "She's had enough, she just doesn't want to know anymore....".
