the sheeting is all on and waterproof,
the immense winds about 60mph gusts are giving it a good workout at the moment,
a couple of the longer beams are flexing/lifting so may have to be strengthened..

heres a pic with a view [for cp]of our local vw srapyard..

Good luck when they come and re-assess your house for council tax.  One of the rumoured changes is that more parking spaces means higher tax band.

We've put scalpings down across our entire front yard (was a driveway with grass on one side) if they try and re-assess it as more parking area we'll just say its a really really low rockery... that you can drive on. Sorted!

i'll not worry ive got an old fifties garage to come down,

mm, I'm with Dean on this one, I'd get some more strength in those joists, sterling board will bend under weight then you'll end up with dips, followed by lakes and eventually rain!! Inside.

i have a cunning plan..[not that one] to add some sprung bracing to the longer lengths...

Hard to tell on the picture but there appears to be no real incline to run the water off (I think my "shed" was 2.5* - which works nicely) ?

As it butts up to your fence are you running the water off the front into a gutter ?

I'd be more worried about the planning/building consent for now - it's quite visable and if anyone happens to take offense a quick call to the council would be an annoyance.
On the plus side it is entirely within your boundaries and below fence level so planning, I wouldn't think, would be a problem but I'd bet my salary that any building inspector would fail those timber purlins.  My Dad made a carport in the 80's and he had to have 2x8's spaced at 16" centres and from memory the max. span was only 6' !!!
The other issue they'd raise is drainage - there's laws now preventing even a driveway being relaid without suitable ACO channels and drainage !!

It'll be a good amount of space when you're done though - the best projects are those that end up giving you more useable space.

all points i researched b4 designing ...

a friend of my[ builder ]brother, who is a bco told me that planning laws have been relaxed recently,2008

and structures under 2.4 meters and not attatched to a dwelling are now exempt from planning,
unless ur in the garden, the whole thing due to where it placed, behind the fences and electric gate, and with our gaff at the top of a hill is invisible, apart from in the air,

the drainage is not so bad as the roof drainage from the house runs nearby, or i may dig a soak away...

i was also told due to cuts the local bco department cant even keep up with their work load and dont have time to worry about people paving over their drives...

for me if push comes to shove my shelter will be a shed as there will be no drive up to it...

i hear what ur sayin ray...its a bit trial and error

the osb is glued to the timber and then the whole lot of it has been treated with water proofed stain,
hence its yellow hue, it was quite white when new

will be looking at strengthening the 6 longer spans those over 2m
the rest are under 2m..
i used OSB beams to prevent twisting, warping and shrinkage and it also keeps the weight down on the steels..
they are also easy to transport and cheap to make,

after seeing them in the construction industry replacing timber joists heres where i knicked my ideas from....

Very true and I've used them.

But each is rated for a particular job/loading/Moisture rating etc . . . . Making your own is like using ungraded timber in construction - it may be O.K but you can't prove it.

The council will (likely) argue the drainage/soak away for the house is only rated for "one house" so they're likely to insist on a soak away - which is a P.O.P to do.

As I say, awesome project.  T'is a pity I don't have more land.

Are you going to reinforce the green wooden fence on top of the brick wall?

I am just thinking if some kids walk down there banging the fence (as what used to happen in Bletchley every day, every night ) and a pannel falls off - will they just be able to see into your shed with all your tools laying out?

This may sound a bit negative, but I am just trying to help. I am sure you have already thought of this though

Good skills Art, keep the pictures coming!

That looks sweet!

Been thinking about putting some ideas into motion for making a carport detached from the house in our front garden to sit the Mustang and Camaro under. The only issue I thought we'd have would be the planning but if you reckon non-attached items don't need it, I reckon we could be in there!

art b

check up with a bco locally andy...
im not sure a ''front garden'' would be suitable...

I think putting it out front you'd definately need to consult a planning officer, first.

art b

fyi....

the roof coped well with 4'' of snow... twice....

but i will be adding additional stength on the longest spans,
