Road trip ?

Be rude not to tick Luxembourg off the list

Roadkill

Night stop-off in Brugge (not too far of route), or Calais . . . .

Talking about this last night at Dean & Sammys.

Thinking about a road trip over the Easter weekend.
Leave Friday Morning and return on the Monday.
Would cover France, Belgium, Luxenbourg & Germany

Taking a look this morning - this could be one suggested route?:

Euro tunnel prices
Return is £51 each way for 1 car (up to 9 passengers)
Single is £73 outbound & £73 inbound

Ferry prices
Return is £39 outbound (11:10 ferry) & £39 inbound (17:15 ferry). Times either side of these can put the price up to £70 each way
Single is £70 outbound & between £50 & £70 inbound

It looks like Etap are now called Ibis (Under the Accor group)
Brussels:
Ibis budget hotels from £34 per double room
There is an Adagio hotel in the city centre, in a shopping & casino centre
That is £77.53 for double room
There are 19 Accor hotels in and around Brussels ranging from £34 to £97

Strasbourg:
There are 29 Accor hotels in and around Strasbourg ranging from £24 to £146
However the 1st 3 cheapest are F1 hotels and we didn't want to stay in them again after Brugge Then 1st non-F1 is Ibis budget at £33.62

Düsseldorf:
There are 54 Accor hotels in and around Düsseldorf ranging from £26 to £98

ianjpage

looks good as you say on that last day, may have to swop a few stops around as last day / first day prob not going to be as much available driving time due to train's / ferry

Could do this instead (Was looking to try to get down to Switzerland but would be just a bit too far )

I've said this year I wanna do a road trip in the Camaro, are you guys planning on taking your cars or is this just a road trip road trip?

Incursus

hmm tempting but Katie gets antsy after an hour in the car let alone almost 20 so I've not been able to tempt her, It would be a bit on the expensive side for a "singleton"

Though I have been given a pass to come out and play if :

a) Katie gets to go on her jolly to Iceland (I've already been)
b) Doesn't conflict with a trip away we're planning the weekend/week before
c) ....can't remember...probably bring back chocolates

Also value for money...with Groupon etc you can get a weekend away for 2 in Rome, Prague, Iceland, Barcelona etc. for £300 or less inc flights.

Road trip with the "normal" cars to save on fuel (gives us more beer money lol)

Aww

Am at least hoping to do Le Mans this year in the Camaro. This would be an interesting addition!

So, 3 nights.

Would love to take one of the Yanks but the Camaro won't be quite ready (I'm not sure it'd clear the ramps on the Eurotunnel !!!) and the Caddy I'm not too sure would be reliable enough - there's so many jobs that I've put off doing as she'll be getting done properly soon.

We haven't ruled out taking Jensen, yet, (childcare dependent) so from that point of view it'd have to be the Mondeo anyway (rear seat belts).

Bloody kids.

On that subject we're obviously looking to get jensen looked after for the trip . . . if that's the case the Mondeo will have 3 seats free and will get a good 55mpg on a run fully loaded.

I get a good 650 miles a tank = £79.

Even on the longer trips Vicky suggests fuel should be under £160 (based on the Mondeo).

I don't mind any of the routes above, but think we need to :

a) Keep it to 300 (max) miles a day  (I did that yesterday and felt that was a reasonable amount).

b) Make sure we tailor it so we stay somewhere decent for the evenings, obviously.

c) Book as early as possible (late Feb - latest).

ianjpage

All sounds good and if you can get jensen looked after then on your car as we can then share the driving (i'm now insured on other cars again!)

ianjpage

obviously if 2 cars are needed then happy to use our's as one way or the other it will be fixed or replaced by then!

Just worked out the Mileage for the last route I posted

Friday: 175 Miles
Saturday: 341 miles with 2 stops on route
Sunday: 247 Miles with 1 stop on route
Monday: 293 miles

If this is too much for the Sat & Monday we really need to decide how far we would like to go into Germany and if we want to stay in a large town or happy to stay in a small town/village

We could change the Saturday night stay to Koblenz instead of Frankfurt.
There are 4 hotels listed in or near Koblenz.
The 2 within 0.7Km are £76 or £83.
1 of the 'near' ones is 5.85Km and the other 43.06Km. These are both £44
We could also stay in Brussels instead of Antwerpen on the Sunday night

This would change the route mileage to be:

Friday: 175 Miles
Saturday: 305 miles with 2 stops on route
Sunday: 206 Miles with 1 stop on route
Monday: 289 miles

Friday: 175 Miles
Saturday: 341 miles with 2 stops on route
Sunday: 247 Miles with 1 stop on route
Monday: 293 miles

With this route on the saturday it breaks down as:
175 miles from Lille to the Car graveyard (About 2 hours 40mins)
24.7 miles from the car graveyeard to Luxemburg (about 33 mins)
142 miles from Luxemburg to Frankfurt (about 2 hours 40 mins)

Approx times to give an idea of the day
Leave at 9am
Get to cars at about 11:40
Leave at about 1:40
Get to Luxemburg about 2:15
Leave Luxemburg about 3:15
Get to Frankfurt about 6ish

As you say - is a bit of a long day, but is do-able.
Although with Jensen as well may need to stop more on the longer journeys
