Honestly though, at the mileage you're stating, I *think* when i did the maths, I worked out cheaper going for the petrol option. Especially when the price was circa £2-3k more than the equivalent petrol. I also, must say, had had enough of diesels. Cold starting issues, modern diesels being FAR more complicated and expensive when they go wrong. Ok a modern petrol still has millions of bits that can go wrong but the forums are smart and diagnostics on them are easier. Plus having seen my friend pick up a whopper of a bill for a DMF + clutch + starter, the idea puts me off.

However, you would get that money back when you come to sell it, or at least some of the extra.

Looking around, it would cost me an extra £1600 to get the diesel over the petrol, that's 2 1/2 years to see my money back from saving in fuel and tax. If I trade the car in in say 5 years at 90,000 miles I'll be £1600 better off plus any retained value. That said, it relies on nothing big going pop in that time....

Really not sure what to do here... I can see the benefits of diesel, but if it goes wrong it carries a price tag...

You were in the position I was, but I simply didn't have the wonga to stretch to the diesel spec when the petrol was there for me to buy.

If it was me, I would go with the petrol everytime though, especially the 1.8l, Cam chains baby!

Titsy

It's not going to be a 1.8. I wanted to save some money on running costs not loose... But I am going to start looking for 1.6 petrols.

What about a Hyundai?

Still under manufacturer's warranty, and I have had an excellent experience of Hyundai dealers and their warranty. No arguments over what is included in the warranty, the car gets repaired and valeted within a few days. Which you cannot say for Ford (another story )

Or how about a VW Golf?

A VW will hold its value very well.

Or, how about an older Diesel?

VW Golf - you could run this at 50/60+MPG and keep the money you have saved in a separate account in-case the car breaks. Or run the car off that saved money, which is the equivalent of running the car for free, if you were going to spend 8k anyway.

I went looking at 1.6 petrol's on Saturday and quickly came to the conclusion that to find one in decent condition I would end up paying not far off what I'd be paying if I went for one of two 1.6 TDCi's I'd looked at... So I went and had another look at 'the blue one' on Sunday and while I found a couple of scuffs I didn't see the first time, It was still miles better than the petrol's I'd seen, plus it had a full ford service history.

I'm collecting on Saturday.
