Does anyone know what the "empty slot" is on the steering column in the pic below?

is it for a column shifter stalk that is not there because this has a centre console so is a floor shifter?

This is a jazzed up chrome steering column you can get for it. Looks like its possibly for the shifter. Keeping it as stock as possible they haven't replaced the column, just deleted the handle.

That said, this looks more like what is there...

FUBAR

Yeah, it looks like its been converted from a Column shift to a floor shifter at some point in the past, the 396 is not original, nor, if it was a 350 are the SS badges (not really a problem) the dash also has the "Park RND" indicators on it from the column shifter.

yep same as my el Camino. I prefer the column shifter.

I So so so so so want this, this is exactly what im looking for from one of these, but having done extensive calculations I can't afford the Loan required to buy it.

I will have to do some saving and when an identical one (or a Monte Carlo in the same colours & options) comes up in a few years i'll see what funds i've got...

Somebody I know had a look at this car, amongst  other things the frame is badly twisted and the car would never drive right as a result, good choice in the end to pass it by.

Kinda suprising as it looked great in the pics, lessons learned eh $5k max is what he said based on his findings
