what else will i need to buy in addition to a Heat shield?

I'd highly recommend a mini-starter.  The large stock one will cook, shield or no shield.  I'm looking at a GM performance one for around $320.

Also, I'd go for locking bolts for the headers, not the "stardard" ARP ones - around $40, I believe, but worth it so I'm told.

Your plug leads should be O.K . . . but how old are they ?

Assuming the headers come with gaskets and relevent bungs etc . . that should do you.

EDIT - No, that wasn't Sammy posting, there . . . .

The standard gaskets I got with mine were shite, I've now brouht good felpro gaskets.

The Stainless bolts I brought were fine and have never loosened but i know some people have problems

I only replaced it about a year or so ago... with a stock one

Hmm, ok worth getting i guess , I assume they unlock ok when you need them too

I was probably going to get some branded ones as well.

On a Separate note, took the car to Paragon today for this year's MOT and it passed easily

One thing I was suprised to see is that its only covered 1,741 miles since last year's test  mental note, drive it more this year

That's about 937 miles more than my Camaro in the last 12 months

So little time & too much

Hmm ok, Cheers m8.

Oh btw, the WOT shift point on the 5.7TPI is at 5000rpm, with a 5500rpm redline.  You asked that ages ago but i kept forgetting to tell you.

The IROC Has a Problem!!

I've noticed it not idleing very smoothly again recently so have pulled the spark plugs this evening (Knuckle casualties: 1) and found that 2 of the plugs, on cylinders 1 & 4 were fouled up, looking not unlike this:

These were the same 2 plugs that were fouled last year when I changed to NGK plugs shortly after Philo's Birthday.  Apparantly according to websites means that Oil is getting into the combustion chamber, either because its too thin, or via the piston rings or Valve stem seals.

If the 710 was too thin i would imagine that the other plugs would show similar, possibly milder symptoms however the other 6 were all perfectly normal.  Even though I have recently swapped from 5w30 oil to 10w40.

Which leaves either Stem seals or Piston Rings...  My money is on a Stem seal problem.

Whats involved in Fixing this? as I probably can't afford to do it atm so am just going to have to whip the plugs out every few months & clean them up.

Might be some stop leak type thing you could pour in

Don't bring it back now
Did i forget to say there was no Guarantee

well if its stem seals  you will get a puff of blue smoke on start up... but im sure that the small amount of oil in that case would not be fouling the plugs as it would soon burn off...

a compression test will show ring wear...... when was the last rebuild..
This forum needs, ''YOU'' posting,Not just reading ! :moon:

Um, Never? I'm pretty sure Mike & Rocky never did anything like that so its into the unknown realms of its US owner...

If its the rings it will smoke when you rev it. Whats the mileage now?

Fieldy

I say return it to the previous owner, you obviously got scammed ryan. Whether you like it or not, you got yourself a shitter.....One of the worst examples I have ever seen.... Personally, i would say it was almost written off there.... I'll take it off your hands for the scrap value, i can't say fairer than that.

No really, I want it!!!!

Rocky

If your selling ill have it for breaking

IMHO 10w40 is way too thin for a Yank engine
Why have you changed ???

but............

Nope

Rocky

As far as i remember that was a high mileage engine so should have a thicker oil or additive to help.

NB:  It was running quite happily to the meet & back yesterday so while the cause of the problem isn't fixed due to lack of £££, at least with regular checking & can keep it running fine.  Unfortunately that will have to do for now
