Well, we popped over to JWR today, sadly they didn't have any other callipers in stock so I was unable to change the crap one over, after lots of moaning they eventually gave me 10% off that one which while not ideal is better than nothing i guess.

I checked with US Automotive and they don't keep them in stock so i'd be looking at a few weeks wait and not knowing what I was going to get at the end of it.

oh well.

Better than a I suppose but If you were building an all-out show car that just wouldn't be acceptable.

The 2nd gen calipers I had from USAutos were'nt matching either.  One was the gunmetal grey, the other gold zinc.

Whilst they are nice and clean it may be worth while painting them with caliper paint ( the two pack resin type ) I did the Panda's when it was new and they clean up very well

I choose black to avoid being Chavy

The thought had crossed my mind... I kinda want to fit them pretty sharpish tho.

whats this 2 part paint you refer to?

It's an epoxy two pack paint, one can of colour resin and one can of hardener.
Mix the two together and you have about 20 minutes before it goes off.

It gives a far more durable finish than normal paint, about £16 a go

FUBAR

where can i get that stuff martyn?

EDGE

i used the regular brake caliper paint from halfords, i think i did 2 coats and it stayed fine for at least 3 years, i sold the car after that so i dont know what it was like long term

FUBAR

Drove the car home today

1 question, with the headlights on the Indicators are VERY slow, with the headlights off they're fine.  There are no blown bulbs and they are equally slow both left and right.

anyone got any ideas what could be causing this?

Sounds like some sort of current drain, do you an ammeter/charge display

ianjpage

one thing to check ryan is the voltage coming out the alternator when the engine is running - should be 13.4 volts or up AFAIK....could be its a tad low and its having the effect of slowing the relays down when the lights are causing a drain....

(Shout if you want me to bring a multimeter to the meet)

FUBAR

I'll bring mine, we'll test it because I can't see where to put the probes...

found it out:

Fenlake Autos
106 Fenlake Road, MK42 0EU
01234 346993

They advised me that they wouldn't charge to take it to bits to inspect it, and would give me a call once they knew what was up and then you decide fix it or return (if you have it returned it will be returned as is - in bits ! )

Jamieg285

From what I've read, it's not too difficult a job to do yourself, and you can buy kits with all the bits in.

I'm looking at doing mine sometime, as it died on me a month ago.

HardRockCamaro

Have you checked the resistance between the battery and chassis, and all the other grounds too?

Mine is a bit slow and a new alternator didn't fix it.  the resistance is a bit high in mine so I need to clean up the grounds...

Jamieg285

What was wrong with the alt?

HRC is right, the speed of the flash is dependant on the resistance.  If you replace regular bulbs with LEDs, the flashers go quicker due to the lower resistance.

If the lights are one, they will be drawing power, and resistance is linked to power somehow (I know V= I/R, but don't know how this links with the flasher relay)

not charging at all - multimeter on the battery with engine not running and then running at revs is the same reading - 11volts!

FUBAR

well, I've had the alt off today but I can't separate the 2 halves to have a look inside.  I can get a rebuild kit from ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ALTERNATOR-REPAIR-KIT--GM--DELCO-CS130_W0QQitemZ400035134189QQcmdZViewItemQQimsxZ20090305?IMSfp=TL090305126003r5057\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ALTERNATOR-REPAIR-KIT--GM--DELCO-CS130_W0QQitemZ400035134189QQcmdZViewItemQQimsxZ20090305?IMSfp=TL090305126003r5057

for cheap (haven;t checked UK sources yet) but I can't see how to get the things apart, there appears to be a drive shaft running through the centre of the alt into a bearing in the rear casing according to the pic on that listing but I haven't got anything large enough to clamp the alt in to try to free this & am not 100% sure thats the only thing keeping it together so don;t want to give it too much welly

Hmm the contacts on the 3 wires from the wire coil jobby appear to be soldered to rectifier...

hopefully they'll come apart ok, judging by the pic on the auction the new one has similar contacts on it.

thats a good value rebuild kit,

i bet the bearings here would cost more than that...!!

im sure someone can solder the wires on for ya....
