What primer do you use with that? the VHT one?

None from memory (it's enamel)

Quoting: FUBAR
Yes, its had a noticable vibration at higher speeds for a while which gets worse with further speed...

It's well, well, well worth getting your UJ's done if the prop is off (W.I.M will most like pop them out for you for very little).

As Rocky says (and as I said to you a little while ago ) steering components frequently get over-looked as a possible cause of problems.

Most people replace the track rods as they think they'll cause the problem as they have joints to wear . . . . . few people take into consideration the idler and even fewer the metal-to-metal joints on the centre link.

Jamieg285

If you're removing the prop to get it balanced, the people doing that would probably be able to replace the joints for you.

I've got the tools to do it, if you are in my area.  You're welcome to use/borrow them.

Quoting: Rocky
Have you checked your idler arm and front steering components

Oddly enough the whole lot, including the steering box is soon to be replaced because i'm having the full kit that dean got from Spohn because he's switching to a manual steering rack, so that will be all brand new.

Might be a UJ going

Hmm, ok, I hadn't thought of that.  but I suppose at 128k miles (nearly) the possibility of wear cannot be overlooked anywhere.
I assume i'd need to supply the UJ's.  $29.95 ea @ Spohn

The primer won't be heat resistant like the top coat

Just make sure you thoroughly clean and degrease.

Yeah thats what I was thinking, although in all honesty the stuff I want to paint could be done with normal paints rather than the VHT enamel stuff as i'm not painting anything that gets hot...  But that paint will be very resistant to any oils, fluids etc etc...

Definately.

I'll order the UJ's so they're here ready, need to have a think & plan this through... as its evident all this is not going to get done in 2 weeks with a 4 day break in the middle...

Might be worth doing some of the smaller jobs now & leave this lot until Nov onwards when the car will be laid up for winter anyway.

Most likely - you'll probably find John Woolfe / US Auto will have them in stock for "not alot", though.

It'll only take a matter of hours to strip it all off the car . . . . About a day to re-fit.  Painting should take 2 days - but if you plan it right one of them can be the blasting day, too.

Should be do-able - just.

But there'll be no getting up at 2pm !!

Were they the ones down by Tires direct (round corner from andy  oils) as iif so when i down there a couple of weeks ago the unit is all locked up, no signs up and no sign of life there now!!!!

FUBAR

Well I started off just doing a couple of small jobs today, well I say small, 1/2 the time was spent dismantling the interior.

The main purpose of this after speaking to Ray @ eddies is to get some corrosion protection on the insides of the rear arches where the panel joins the outer wing, but I also decided while all the interior plastics were out to finally remove the 1/2 dead Phoenix Gold amp that has been in the boot for years doing EFF-all & the tidy away the wiring for the old 80's brick carphone kit so that its hidden away. (decided not to fully remove that...)

I also thought i'd put some clear POR15 paint on the boot floors as well, which are utterly MINT as it is total opposite to my Red Z28 where they were missing in places...

I also had a look @ the 3rd Brake light to hopefully make all 5 bulbs consistantly light up as some are a bit intermittent ATM.

They've moved to bigger premises . . . . don't ask me where, though.

ahh that would exlpain it!

FUBAR

Today was spent finishing off the POR-15 on the back of the car, this included removing the rear bumper cover & assessing what was going on behind there... in reality, not a lot, just lots of nice blue Metal

This also gave me the opportunity to remove & clean up all the rear lights & get rid of 20+ years of road grime that has been hiding back there.
(Oh and change a blown sidelight bulb, which I've handily swapped for one from a packet I found in the D/S wing well when I took everything out yesterday the packet had $0.95 on the pricetag so its been in there for a while!!.

Oh FYI the Clear POR-15 Rust preventative paint is every bit as good as the Black stuff, but obviously keeps the body colour underneath

Didn't really do a lot on this today, just a couple of little jobs, painted 2 things, put a couple of bits back together, then spent some time playing Battlefield BC2

Quiet day.

Tomorrow is just putting the interior back together as its all in my room ATM, and a couple of small Bolt-twiddling jobs under the hood.

I'm liking the look of the clear POR15

Me thinks this could find a home on my Zee

Rocky

Rust creeps under the clear POR15 it is thicker than the black but not as good rust protection. Is ok on clean steel but not over rust like they say it is. Hot Rod magazine found the same problem when they tested it.

FUBAR

noted, cheers Rich.

Its worth noting not to use the Rust preventative paint on anything that gets a lot of sunlight, best on anything under the car or that is hidden behind stuff like that area.

FUBAR

Well its all back together again albeit temporarily... didn't bother taking a pic, everyone's seen that before!

I have to admit i'm facing next week's jobs with a certain amount of trepidation... its a new level of dismantling for me...  the interior stuff is a Piece of Piss, I could probably do that blindfolded now!!

The most worrying thing is that the car NEEDS to be fully functional on Saturday as i'm going paintballing and it has to get me there & back.

Never restrict your time on such things too heavily . . . you'll end up rushing and messing something up.

Best make sure you've definately got the time to get everything done first.

If you're talking about the rear-end stuff there are a butt-load of potential issues you can run into - brittle brake lines & fittings spring to mind, initially . . . . sheared bolts that you haven't got replacements of, etc . . .

Be careful !

FUBAR

Yeah thats what i'm thinking, i'm going to see if I can share a lift with someone for the Saturday, at least that way I can relax a bit.

If I can't I may well leave this until Nov time when the car won't be going anywhere anyway.

Also would anyone like to help out? apart from the extra Brains & pair of hands/eyes that stuff is bloody heavy!
