OK then, the deal is this:

At some point in the future I want a cowl hood, to give me the necessary additional clearance for 'toys'.

My original plan was to bite the bullet and get a pukker fibre glass jobbie(bolt on) $$$$$$

However, being as I now have a car full of spare parts, it has occured to me that I could use the spare bonnet and graft a scoop on instead, at considerably less cost.  The downside is, that unless it's done very well, it may not be such a good idea.

Anyone got any experience and or advice?

You've gotta ask yourself are you capable of this.

If you cock-up It'll get expensive.

What's involved? -

Cut hole - carefully!
Trial fit scoop - trim to fit.
Fit scoop
Filler edges
Paint?

Phone Rocky and explain what went wrong?...  Only joking buddy

The easy easy way is the Bugcatcher route, infinate clearance! but they don't always look good.

No, I did think about a low profile front opening scoop, but decided against it.  Thinking of a 2-3 inch cowl.

IMHO, Bugcatchers are just chav unless you're gonna go blown....

Very pointless on a daily driver too, hence the more subtle option all round.

maybe this is a question for rocky......

Are you looking to buy a formed scoop to put on your existing hood or attempt to make your own scoop ?

Whatever, never rely on adhesives to hold the scoop on, get some fixings (even if only small ones) fixed through the hood.

A proper formed one - probably a Harwood.

Fixings?  Bolts, screws or other?  I assume these would get hidden under the filler?

Hood scoops. Way to go. Am only biased as I've got one already.  Complete hood and scoop about 450 pounds including inport.

I'd hope that it has an internal return which you fix it the bonnet through using small machine screws and nyloks.

Also this is good as it helps your bonnet resist flexing which WILL cause cracks between it and the scoop.

With chris' I skimmed around the edges of the scoops with fibre glass then sanded and added filler oveer this.

Each one's held on by 3xM6 (or M8 I forget) bolts.

I saw an advert but I can't remember where (CA or ACW or fleabay) for a couple of guys in England who custom make fibre glass hoods, mainly for yanks.
Been trying to find them again for ages as I want a cowl for the 'stang but can' remember the site. Any ideas?

my personal opinnion is that anything hanging through the bonnet looks both tacky, and horribly dated, not to mention the ever present issue with MOT's... with VOSA now wanting pictures of the car at testing stations, i see it as a possible issue in the future...

second gens look the danglies with cowl hoods..

Yup.

Cowl looks good on most motors late '60's on wards, IMO.

If you're prepared to buy a scoop and graft it why not just buy a cowl and grafty it if thats what you really want ???

Jamieg285

Sorry, I've probably confused matters by calling it a scoop.  I have no intentions of a scoop, cowl all the way.

It's just a question of wether grafting one on is a sensible option.

Big Mouse

Grafting a cowl is easier than grafting a sccop, you have more surface area to fix to or you could fix it from underneath shaker style, theres a couple of cars in sprtsman ET that have theirs done this way and it looks kind of cool
