Err no where because...........

Some makes of cars fitted with air conditioning pre 1993, may be charged with a gas known as R12 which is now obsolete, due to it's damaging effect on the ozone layer, it is also unlawful to regas a system with R12. There are however several options available to you if your car is charged with R12 gas. The options are:

The retrofitting of all components and pipework to allow the system to be charged with R134a gas, this can be costly though.
Recharging the system using an ozone-friendly drop in replacement refrigerant, which requires no changing of parts.
Converting the system to R134a, by adding an approved supplement to the system to allow it to be regased with R134a.

EDGE

yeah... i was aware of that... but a lot of places can drain the system and use a drop in gas, which is NOT 134a, to save you the hassle of replacing/modifying parts..

F Body

RS24 is a drop in replacement gas for R12 and is a blend of refrigerants. RS24 uses mineral oil and requires no changes to compressor, dryer or pipework. RS 24 is more expensive than R134a but assuming your AC system is sound it is cheaper than re-fitting.

Your system will need any R12 removing or if empty pressure testing to ensure the system is not leaking. Vacuum the system for 40 minutes and
re-charge with RS24 and add 6 oz of SG5 compressor oil.

RS24 is not a CFC and is readily available and legal.

that'd be the stuff

A guy here at work has just taken his Car into a Place Called MK Gearbox Centre who also specialise in Air-Con. He has an R12 system on his Pajero (Which turned out to be broken so they only charged him £20 for the testing) & they do a Gas called RS24 which is a direct replacement for R12 and doesn't require the new fittings etc that are needed for R134.

They are located here:

Tavistock Street, Bletchley.
They can be contacted on 01908 644446
Aparantly its about £80 for a complete re-gas & system check.

I've been told R134 can wear out old converted R12 systems over time too so this looks like abetter option.

damn....... thanks dude...

that guy (at the above place) was UBER helpful.. I'll definately be taking it to him soon...

he says he can test it with vaccume for a minor charge, just for the time, then fill it ith gas, if it starts to come out he'll find where its coming from and then vac all the gas back out, so ill ony get charged for whet is lost... BARGAIN...

Erm, if it's been tested with vacuum (for at least 45 mins) and passes, then the gas can't possibly leak.

This is a good article on R12 -> R134 conversion which explains why the steps are necessary as well.

dont convert to R134a - just use RS24

did this on my van and it was ICE cold, i have heard of R134a conversions not being especialy cold....  its a lot cheaper to use RS24 too

it can it depends on what type of leak youve got... if its a split in the top of a pipe the vaccume may simply seal the slit, but with pressure it may blow it open.... apparently...

I dont want to convert either, too pricey, a simple drop in will do me fine

That would make sense to me

Yeah It can, the gas leaked out my brothers car in just over a week after re-gas.

Turns out it was more like a month or so...

but it still going (if not a little weaker) since I used the DIY regassing stuff from halfrauds.

EDGE

some of that diy gas has leak sealing agents in it...
