Guys, when we were checking bushes it was the tie rod ends that were looking a bit ropey wasn't it...?

yup, although i would have used shot as a description

***edit***

they are track rod ends

Titsy

Well GM call the tie rod ends... but the only bit the looked 'shot' appears to be nothing more than a dust cover.... So i'm not sure replacing the rod ends will fix my twitchy steering...

55starchief

If the boots are shot water and other crap gets into the ball joint and you need to change them as its an MOT fail point as is play in them

If the boots go, crap gets into the joint and ruins the part . . . . replace them, seriously . . . they've probably been like that for a while.

Titsy

Fair doos.... I which case:

Phil-O, I need some new 'Outer Tie Rod Ends' for the 'maro as the ones on there are $haged the GM part Number is 21011027 (part 1 below)... Is there any chance you can drop into John Wolfe ot US Automotive and pick me a pair up? Will be seeing you Saturday night for FUBAR's pi$$-up, so I'd pay you back then If you're ok with it... I'll try and give them a ring and get some prices tomorrow... I'm hoping it's something they will have on the shelf...

55starchief

You might be better giving philo a call mate

I've got exactly the same thing at the moment, and it is the outer tie rods that need replacing.

Roadkill

Control arm bushes were the culprit on my 4th Gen but there appear to be fine on Titsy's . . . .

philoldsmobile

not a problem mate, i'll pick them up tomorrow..

Titsy

its not mine it belongs to the bodyshop, all i have is caster camber and floor plates

Titsy

Ahh crap.... I thought it was yours.... Any chance you can get hold of it?

55starchief

Last time i see it dave was taking it home to align his kitcar. I wont have a chance to get to the shop tomorrow and i have a sneaky feeling dave is in scotland for christmas

You might have to do it the old fasioned way with chalk marks on the floor and string

Titsy

I suppose it doesn't have to be spot on, just good enough to drive safely untill I can get it into a garage to be checked and adjusted...

Titsy

Could I use the floor plates to ease the process?

not really any point as you have no datum to start with

Titsy

Will tripods and a wire not do the job?

Oh well, I guess I should have gone with the eBay option if I cant do the work....

55starchief

just thread the damn things on and drive it, you wont damage anything in the amount of driving your gonna do before you can get it checked

Roadkill

Wear will only happen over hundreds of miles, mate, really.

Fit them and use your best guess - that'll be fine for now . . .
