its really not difficult or expensive to fab a stainless grille

cast iron will need some sort of coating or plating on it first, as it contains graphite, and is quite poisonous..

stainless steel is the best option..

Philo all gas bbq plates are cast iron same as some cookware mate

philoldsmobile

depends on how its cast though mate, it needs to be ahneeled (sp?) to seal the surface, as raw cast iron is really nasty filthy stuff..

believe me, i've worked with it a lot..

stainless is far cleaner...

Ah ok makes sence

philoldsmobile

even mild steel of a grade better than EN3B will be fine (3B contains a lot of lead! )

i can definatley sort something, and stainless wont be a problem....

and that bit of battle ship armour ,will be a bastid to cut!

did ya decide on the plating?
too much bling?
still think ya should consider decking for the standing areas,ie;
A frame,and bbq area!

boiler plate should be fine, as it is a kinned iron..

getting through the outer skin will be a bastard, if you stop mid cut it glazes, and is hard as glass..

would flame cut fairly easy though..

Roadkill

O.K, as mentioned to Graeme, and further to site survey - the 6mm C/P shouldn't be an issue.

philoldsmobile

i have some offcuts of mild steel sheet sitting at work that were going to go into the scrap bin, including a length about 6 feet long with a 90* fold in it.

will work fine for the wheel arches..

Cool snag that then mate, scraps like that are always handy for brackets etc, do you guys want me to order up the plate for the sides and rear or leave this till next week?

FUBAR

Have we decided what we're having on the sides & rear yet?  If so then it can't hurt to order it sooner rather than later, we know the sizes etc so at least we've got it that way
It's the time that we kill that keeps us alive...

Roadkill

Agreed.

As long as we're sure what we want.

55starchief

also it was discussed last night about plywood for the floor, a sheet of 18mm marine ply will be about £20 a sheet of steel about the same

55starchief

What do others think? I Like the idea.

So long as it cooks a decent burger and doesn't fall apart on the  motorway its all fine by me
