Get a saucpan and fill it with water, then suspend the stat in it whilst you heat it to boiling point

I'm on the case

You think it will get hot enough then ??

Roadkill

I'm not with you.  What's the problem in getting it to 84*C ?

As Graeme says, suspended in a saucepan . . . always works for me.

Use a thermometer (just remember not to let it touch the bottom of the pan).

Roadkill

You'll need to fully submerge it Martyn.

Use a thermometer

The only thermometer I have only goes to 50*C

Well I didn't for two reason's, the hot water comes from below when it's in the cooling system and I thought I see the water come in the top recess if it opens

F Body

A bit out of focus because it was dam hot, but she's open

F Body

If you take it out of the water you can watch it slowly close, so that's an OK in my book

55starchief

Well that removes that from the equation then

Pitty really because that would have been a simple fix, going to try turning the engine over and see if the water pump does anything.

NB : Safety Note : With the cut out switch on

Trouble is the pump isn't really a pump, it's just an impeller which should help the water flow

Turning the engine over does make the coolant overflow the thermostat housing, all be it very slowly

55starchief

Im gonna guess at maybe a blockage in the rad

Even light pressure on both outlet pipes ( 2 cylinders remember ) and the bottom hoses pushes to water into the thermostat housing. No evidence of any restrictions or blockages and no air locks
Well she's back together now so I'll give her a run out one night this week

Well cooling problems seem to be unheard of, hence the reason I've been keen to track this one down, the only posted problems relate to split hoses or leaks

art b

mabe it just needs more fan cooling than its getting..?[without the fan overide]

Bearing in mind the engine only turns over very slowly on the starter
